25838ONE Okill's ALS: '2 Duke Street / Liverpool 30th. June 1848'. TWO Bliss's Unsigned Autograph notes: Without date or place. This forgotten case of identity fraud predates the celebrated Titchborne case by more than a decade. The only other refence to it located is in a document in the Derbyshire Records Office: a copy of a printed circular appeal for money from Okill dated 13 October 1849 a little more than a year later than the present item on behalf of Thomas Hudson whose claim to the Dukedom of Devonshire is ‘said to be inherited through grandmother Lady Mary Garget claimant of property left in trust by 4th Duke for his Duchess and Daughter imprisoned for life as lunatic by Trustees with further specious undated details’. For the recipient Philip Bliss see his entry in the Oxford DNB. Both letter and response are on a 12mo bifolium. It is in good condition lightly aged and worn. ONE: ALS to ‘Revd Doctor Bliss / &c &c &c’ signed ‘William Okill’. 2pp 12mo. Fifty-four lines. Neatly and closely written on the first leaf of the bifolium. Begins: ‘Revd Sir / I have before me your kind communication to my friend Mr. Joshua Hainsworth of Sunnyside Rawtenstall in this County under date Feby 24th. 1848 / We have again to trespass upon your attention for another poor Gentleman who is claiming the Title dignity and Estates of his Ancestor the last rightful Duke of Devonshire - The present possessor & his reputed Father are not Cavendishes but Smiths - the last was a steward on the Estates and we have affidavits from the old Tenants who knew him as Mr. Smith and also afterwards when he had usurped the name & assumed the Title of Duke’. Should Bliss wish to know more he is enclosing not present ‘Hudson’s Petition to Her Majesty requiring her aid in his behalf and which has been referred to Her Attorney General for his report’. He goes into great detail about a ‘Pedigree of the Ducal Line’ ‘remodelled to bring in these Smiths but is has been compiled in so slovenly a way that the plastering or patching up is as visible as new cloth upon an old Garment’. He asks various questions in relation to ‘the different Sons who were entered at the university of Oxford’. He asks Bliss to insert the names ‘as you did in detail as you did sic the “Leighs†for it is rather important that we have the Christian name of the Dukes as they occur thus / “John Son of William Earl of Devonshire &câ€. Ends: ‘Please to state your charge & it shall be remitted by a Post Office order in due course - / Mr. Ainsworth desires his kind respects’. TWO: Bliss’s notes. 1p 12mo. On recto of second leaf. Unsigned but in Bliss’s unmistakable elegant hand. Apparently made by Bliss for his own purposes while retaining Okill’s letter. Punctilious to a fault Bliss would certainly have conveyed the information in a letter to Okill. Ten lines in Latin comprising three entries regarding matriculation of members of the Cavendish family in 1715 1724 and 1755. See Image of pp.2/3 ONE (Okill's ALS): '2 Duke Street / Liverpool 30th. June 1848'. TWO (Bliss's Unsigned Autograph notes): Without date or place. hardcover
21095On letterhead of La Haule Manor Jersey. 11 August 1915. 4pp. 12mo. Bifolium. In fair condition lightly aged and worn with rust-spotting at foot and to one margin. An interesting document relating to the early days of women's admission to British universities. The recipient is the geologist Ernest Westlake 1855-1922 and the subject is his daughter Margaret Agnes Westlake who would become a diploma student at St Hugh's. Westlake's papers are held at the Museum of Natural History Oxford. Marett thinks it is 'a bother about your daughter not being able to enter Somerville but Somerville is not Oxford'. He suggests she try 'St Hugh's cheaper than S. and enlarging itself so likely to have vacancies; or why not simply enrol as a Home Student' He thinks he 'could get her admitted straight away as a student of anthropology; for Heathers showed me her essays and I thought well of them and could testify that she was of considerable ability'. Although this might not be the course 'I mean anthropology minus classical mods. or what not' she was 'set on' he thinks it would 'prove very stimulating and enlarging to the mind'. He cannot 'discuss the question whether anthropology would pay whether it would lead directly to a practical career and so on. All that is beside the point when it is a question of education – of growing a soul.' It is 'Time and opportunity' which will tell 'how far one's realized powers' will be pointed in the right direction 'but depend on it they make themselves felt for the bettering of human life somehow'. He concludes with the reassurance that there is 'plenty of work to be done by women anthropologists. I have two or three of them at work now – Mrs Czaplicka Maria Antonina Czaplicka 1884-1921 Polish anthropologist in Siberia for instance. Baldwin Spencer W Baldwin Spencer 1860-1929 Anglo-Australian anthropologist wants women workers in Australia. Money will be scarce after the war however.' 16389Balliol College University of Oxford. 4 December 1823. 2pp. 8vo. 29 lines of neatly-written text. In fair condition on aged paper with two 5 cm closed tears to leaf. Addressed to 'My dear Marshall'. He regrets that his letter should contain 'so truly painful an account of the state of your family & affairs in the West Indies' but was 'glad to receive it since after my last communication I was at a loss not seeing you in Oxford to explain your silence - I hope at some future occasion I shall see you again under my roof'. Regarding William Tierney Elton d.1874 he writes that on referring to his 'list' he sees that 'Mr: Elton's name is entered for admission in some part of the year 1825' and it gives him 'real pleasure to hear so favourable a report of him & I trust he will do credit to his Tutor & College'. He is sorry that he has 'no means of forwarding the views of your Nephew at Westminster' only having 'little acquaintance' with the Dean of Christ Church' who has 'many & strong applications' to deal with. He concludes with a reference to 'the admirable & invaluable member of our Society for whom you gave your last vote as Fellow of Balliol <Ellering> has within the short space of seven years the option of <> vacant by the melancholy death of poor Rogers'. He concludes in the hope of seeing Marshall again 'within the walls of old Balliol'. Balliol College [University of Oxford]. 4 December 1823. unknown

Booklist hailed it as "one of the most current atlases available today" and singled out its "well-designed format and superior use of map colors." And John Noble Wilford writing in The New York Times Book Review called it a veritable encyclopedia of geographic information underscoring its "greater variety of maps and the inclusion of so much noncartographic information" and adding that "those old staples of geography textbooks--fossil fuel reserves steel production literacy standings--never looked more inviting of further study." But world politics has been especially volatile in recent years producing numerous changes to the face of the globe. To bring our Atlas of the World completely up to date Oxford now announces a new Second Edition with dozens of significant alterations to the maps of Europe Africa South America and the Middle East. For instance the Atlas now shows the Slovak Republic the Czech Republic Bosnia-Herzegovina and Macedonia; it redraws the boundary between Saudia Arabia and Iraq; and it displays new administrative divisions in Nigeria. The new maps also reveal extensive updating of finer details such as the latest Trans-Amazonian highways a new reservoir south of Bamako Mali and the Guri Reservoir in Venezuela. And the index has been completely revised to reflect all these changes. Of course the basic qualities of the Atlas--the exquisite mapmaking and the wealth of supplemental information--are as superb as ever. As in the original edition readers will find hundreds of outstanding full-color maps produced by Europe's finest cartographers George Philip Ltd. The heart of the book is the 160-page section of large-scale world maps providing detailed political and topographical information about every nation on Earth enhanced by relief shading and layer-colored contours. There are also 66 city maps charting the key urban centers of each continent. The 75000-entry index offers easy convenient access to specific locations with full geographical coordinates and a convenient number-letter access system. And the stunning 48-page Introduction to World Geography section--beautifully illustrated with lavish color maps graphs and diagrams--offers a systematic look at world geography covering topics such as climate the greenhouse effect plate tectonics agriculture health population and migration international organizations global conflicts and much more. Exquisitely designed thoroughly updated and packed with informative articles graphs and charts Oxford's Atlas of the World offers the finest global coverage available. It is the benchmark by which all other international map references will be measured.</p> Oxford University Press hardcover
