Begins 'The College today at its Special General Meeting did itself the honour of electing you to an Honorary Fellowship. We trust that it may not be unacceptable to you to be thus associated with our Society. There are no duties save that of wearing a surplice in Chapel on Sundays and Feasts of the Church.' He thanks Gore for his 'generous words' of the previous day. Letter Two: 4to 2 pp. He thanks him for his 'helpful letter about David' Gore's son the Conservative politician William David Ormsby-Gore 5th Baron Harlech 1918-1985 and consequently raises no objection 'to his being out of College in the Autumn' which 'may well prove to be the best thing for him'. The previous day David told Fisher 'that he was anxious to go into the House of Commons as soon as possible'. Fisher 'can see from his appreciation of Thucydides and de Tocqueville which is obviously genuine that his mind is taking a political shape.' He sees 'gleams of unusual promise about the boy' and thinks that 'As his physical strength improves and as the memories of those shocks to which you allude fade into the background . he will gain in confidence and concentration'. Characterises him as being at that time 'wayward elusive casual rather than idle decidedly <> with occasional touches of brilliance extremely sensitive and reserved' and with 'a certain distinction of nature'. Eighteen lines closely and neatly written headed 'To the Council of Bath College'. An approving testimonial: 'The Revd. Robert Hutchison who is a candidate for the Head mastership of Bath College was my pupil during his residence as an Undergraduate at Exeter College Oxford and I have much pleasure in certifying to the high charater he bore for industry and good behaviour during that period. He was Scholar of the College and his scholarship was good and sound as he proved by getting a First Class in Moderations. Written in autograph on both sides of a blank 9 x 11 cm card with embossed House of Commons device at top left of first page. In good condition lightly aged. It begins: 'Darling – I am too busy to-day to write. The house is nearly finished & <Charty> I believe came this morning as she has no pied à terre. Bob also arrived from his fishing wh. improved at the end. <Cys> goes off this evening to Winchester.' He gives the initials indecipherable of the individual at whose house he dined two nights before '& went up to see the Bart & talked with him for some time. He <feeds naturally> now & is really better. I was quiute alert about everything. The doctor with whom I had a cosy talk is fairly hopeful. The Cabinet affirmed the Budget to-day.' He has got tickets in the other Ladies Gallery i.e. to the House of Lords for my sister so use yours for Violet & anyone else. Shall see you Monday. Bring up motor.' The ‘settlement’ movement was the result of growing unease among the educated classes regarding the condition of the poor. The two most celebrated settlements both still active are Toynbee Hall in Whitechapel and Oxford House in Bethnal Green. From the papers of Sir William David Ross 1877-1971 Vice-Chancellor of Oxford. The present printed circular is 1p 12mo. Printed on wove watermarked paper. In good condition lightly aged and folded once. Asquith’s signature is genuine. Reads: ‘October 1911. / DEAR SIR / It will readily be admitted that social problems have not diminished but rather increased in gravity since the foundation of the first University Settlements. Believing that the Settlements are still one of the best ways in which Oxford men may become familar with those problems and in some degree contribute to their solution we venture to call your attention to the meeting of which a notice is enclosed and to the accompanying paper drawn up by the promoters of the meeting. / Yours faithfully / W. This volume lacks the title page paper is pretty bright although the initial pages are not so much so as the rest of the pages; Volume II: 566 pages; Volume III: xi 567 pages index; Volume IV: 576 pages index; Volume V: 588 pages index; Volume VI: vii 556 pages index; Volume VII: xii 606 pages; This volume lacks the title page; Volume VIII: xii 580 pages index; Volume IX: x 567 pages index; Volume X: 560 pages. The Table of contents calls for a pamphlet beginning at page 561: <em>Proposals for the reformation of schools…. </em>Would guess it would probably runs about 15 pages.Volume XI: 564 pages index;Volume XII: 290 pages index plus cxxx pages of general index. I checked in the General Index for the <em>Proposals for the reformation of schools. </em>but didn't find any reference to it. Maybe an oversight or maybe my error.The set is bound in a very bright red buckram with gilt lettering on spine. Probably done by the previous owner when he was at Chapel Hill in the early 1980's. The page blocks have occasional toning and some light dampspotting but are supple and clean. Couple of volumes may have very slight musty smellOverall with defects noted a good clean tight set. $150 Box 27</p><p>The <em>Harleian Miscellany</em> is a collection of material from the library of the Earl of Oxford and Earl Mortimer collated and edited by Samuel Johnson and William Oldys between 1744 and 1753 on behalf of the publisher Thomas Osborne. Its subtitle was <em>A Collection of Scarce Curious And Entertaining Pamphlets And Tracts as well In Manuscript As In Print Found In The Late Earl Of Oxford's Library Interspersed With Historical Political And Critical Notes. </em>The "late Earl of Oxford" whose library was the source of the texts could refer either to Robert Harley 1st Earl of Oxford and Earl Mortimer died 1724 or to his son Edward Harley 2nd Earl of Oxford and Earl Mortimer died 1741.</p> Printed for Robert Dutton, Gracechurch-Street, hardcover
