24141Undated; on letterhead of the Oxford University Press Warehouse and Trade Department London. See Nicolas Barker’s typically-elegant obituary of Williamson in the Independent. 2pp 4to. The obituary of the recipient Andrew Block 1892-1987 in ‘The Private Library’ was subtitled ‘the doyen of booksellers’; his business was established in 1911. On aged and worn paper; folded three times. Signed ‘Hugh Williamson:’ and addressed to ‘Mr Block’. Thirty-one lines in a close calligraphic hand. Having been ‘particularly lucky’ every time he has called on Block and having acquired ‘the 12mo Baskerville the Pickering in Caslon’s types and the plays printed by John Bell’ on his last visit he asks him to ‘keep an eye open for one or two cheap items’. Before giving a list of books he ‘particularly’ needs from the Aldine Press to Baskerville he describes his interest ‘in the development of roman and italic types which means that most of the books I need were printed before the end of the 18th century. On the other hand I can’t really afford even a guinea for a book unless it’s the kind of thing I could sell again for as much as I gave in case of need. The result is that I’m willing to put up with bad condition in the binding missing plates and text pages etc which might put off the “proper†collector.’ Undated; on letterhead of the Oxford University Press Warehouse and Trade Department, London. unknown

2002OUP 4 & 11 Oct. 1929 26 May 1932 and 16 March 1943. Publisher Oxford University Press. One page each 8vo 2 and 4to 2 one grubby fold marks minor defects but texts clear and complete. Two are goodhumoured brief and concerning social trivia. The one sent in 1932 goes: "This is to introduce Sir Wallis Budge. I have told him you are the best bookseller in London and would be able to get him all he wanted." one ms. correction and one ms. addition. The letter dated 1943 discusses the works of Mark Rutherford: "I remember in very old days you were a devoted admirer of my late brother-in-law Mark Rutherofrd. The Oxford University Press editioln of the Novels is the only edition I think now in existence but our annual sales are miserable; most of them barely reach double figures." He asks if Wilson would give his opinion before he arranged for existing stocks to be pulped on whether Rutherford was likely to come back into fashion. "I should be very loath to let Mark Rutherford for whose works I still have a great admiration drop out of circulation but I cannot keep my congested warehouse groaning under six unsaleable books indefinitely." 16598On his Oxford University Press letterhead 'Manager: HUMPHREY MILFORD Head Office: Amen Corner London E.C. 4'. 16 August 1919. 1p. 4to. In fair condition on aged and spotted paper. A convincing copy of a genuine typed letter with Milford's signature and the letterhead in black ink and the typewritten text in purple. 25 lines of text in three paragraphs. An interesting glimpse into the state of the British publishing industry in the period immediately following the First World War. Begins: 'Dear Sir It is unfortunately quite clear that any hope which may have been entertained of the possiblity of a general reduction in the price of books must now be abandoned; at any rate for some considerable time.' Despite 'a fall in the price of paper which has now stopped' costs 'have mounted steadily; the cost of printing books is now higher than it has ever been. . Wages have been again raised in all the trades - paper-making printing and binding .'. The second paragraph explains how although 'the 37 1/2 % which has been added to invoices since November 1918 is not sufficient to cover the increased charges' he is holding off increasing this to 50 %. In a last short paragraph he states his intentions regarding prices for the period ending on 1 January 1920. Neatly written biography of Milner beneath the letter. "Mr Wood & myself request you very particualrly upon the receipt of this note to come down to Cambridge immediately. Your words inked out assistance will very much facilitate a business we have now in hand. We hope you are in London because the business does not admit of delay. Unless you are here to go to work with us on Friday & on Saturday morning it will be quiote too late. We have a meeting on Saturday in the afternoon. Write by return of post or rather bring yourself." NOte: "Isaac Milner FRS 11 January 1750 – 1 April 1820 was a mathematician an inventor the President of Queens' College Cambridge and Lucasian Professor of Mathematics. He was instrumental in the 1785 religious conversion of William Wilberforce and helped him through many trials and was a great supporter of the abolitionists' campaign against the slave trade steeling Wilberforce with his assurance before the 1789 Parliamentary debate." Macgregor is not named but the item comes from a batch of his papers. His 'Translations from the Greek Anthology' was published without date in London by Nissen and Parker. Macbride oversaw the move completed in 1822 of Magdalen Hall from alongside Magdalen College to the site of the defunct Hertford College after which it was renamed in 1874.
