Nice copy of an indispensable guide to Oxford in the Thirties. Part I was completed in 1932, Part II is revised to 1933. Cordeaux & Merry 1568 (recording the first edition).

Slight fading to spine of dust jacket which also has small brown area, probably by heat on back cover. Light foxing and dust to top page edges and a little foxing on fore-edges.

8vo., neat signature on half-title; handsomely bound in green full calf BY BUMPUS OF OXFORD, back with five raised bands, second compartment lettered in gilt, all other compartments tooled in gilt with a floral motif, gilt edges, gilt doublures, marbled endpapers, backstrip mildly rubbed else a very good, bright, crisp copy. The binding is signed on front paste-down.
Book is in excellent condition; unread, appears new in every respect save a tiny bit of edge wear at spine ends, some fading. Binding is solid and square, covers have sharp corners, exterior shows no other blemishes, text/interior is clean and free of marking of any kind. The glue in this perfect bound book is over 50 years old and is likely fragile.

First edition of Archbishop Benson's famous 'Lincoln Judgment', following the ecclesiastical trial of Edward King, Lord Bishop of Lincoln, charged with eight ritual offences carried out in the Diocese of Lincoln. One of the most important ecclesiastical trials relating to the Oxford Movement, the case delivered two fundamental judgements. First, a binding legal decision on certain disputed questions of ritual, and secondly that the jurisdiction of the archbishop of Canterbury alone is sufficient to try one of his suffrgan bishops. A rare survival.
