Sous Dioclétien, Maximien, commandant de légion, ayant demandé un massacre ou un sacrifice à Jupiter, Maurice et ses compagnons refusèrent d'y participer. Furieux, Maximien procéda à une première décimation, sans résultat ; il procéda alors à une seconde décimation, en vain, et fit alors exécuter la totalité de la troupe.
