201 pages of profoundly fascinating and delightful illustrated history. Author's father (b. 1870) left Yorkshire, England with his young family for Canada in 1909 and arrived in Fife Lake, Saskatchewan where they spent their first winter in a straw house. Author was born in a sod house in 1910 and moved with his family to Montana when he was 6 years old. At age 14 the family moved to Victoria, B.C. and from there to Nanoose Bay, further up Vancouver Island. Most pages contain brief text, accompanied by the author's simple sketches of the way things were. He has stressed the most practical elements of daily life and survival. A priceless compilation of the challenges and genius of the pioneer. Examples include: how to hunt prairie antelope by wearing a white sheet; avoiding flying ants by erecting a pole to your wagon and hanging a coat at its top; uprooting stumps by tying them to nearby trees to be felled; cutting wood by rigging a buzzsaw to the back wheel of a Model "T" Ford truck; and many, many more. Mentions Vancouver Island landmarks such as the Arlington Hotel, Lantzville Hotel, Quarterway Hotel, and more. This book lends itself wonderfully to teaching youngsters the ways of the not-so-distant past. You will have great difficulty in putting it down. Book

This man, with his message that touches on the very meaning of life, is one of the miracle-makers, the Supergods." - from dust jacket. Book clean and unmarked with light wear. Pages have partially yellowed at edges. Light wear to dust jacket which is now preserved in a protective cover. Very nice copy. Book
[8], 9-304 pp. All seven black and white plates present. Publisher's maroon cloth illustrated on front and backstrip. Higgins [1834-1917] was Speaker of the British Columbia Legislature. "I have adhered as closely as possible to descriptions of the peculiarities of speech and mode of life of the men and women who peopled the Pacific Coast forty or fifty years ago. The stories of the occult, which comprise several chapters, are left to the judgement of wiser heads than mine. I have seen much that puzzled and mystified me, and I am still seeking light, thus far with indifferent success. The reminiscent stories are all founded upon actual occurrences, and in the years to come may be found of value to the student of early events in California and the British Pacific. I have aimed to write history, so far as it came under my own observation, in an entertaining manner." - Preface. Unmarked with average wear. Binding intact. Front hinge starting. Foxing to edges and last several leaves. No dust jacket as issued. A sound copy of this wonderful presentation of Pacific Coast life in the mid-1800s.
