ARCHAEOLOGY MEETS SCIENCE: BIOMOLECULAR INVESTIGATIONS IN BRONZE The Primary Scientific Evidence 1997-2003

328 pages; This book has come out of a project that pioneered, and is continuing to pioneer, the in-depth application of state of the art scientific analyses to ceramic artefacts and skeletal material. The vases and skeletons of Bronze Age Greece which are the subjects of this comprehensive study, do not appear as they do in their usual format - illustrations in a book with descriptions of contexts. In this project, and therefore in this book, each object is revealed from the inside, and because of this, it has a different story to tell - what people ate and drank in everyday life, the diet and health of the people who lived in Bronze Age Greece. By means of organic residue and stable isotope analysis, knowledge has been extended beyond anything previously gleaned through normal archaeological research. There are some fascinating insights, such as the origin of modern Greek retsina, which was traced first to the time of Agammemnon, then to Crete in the 17th century BC and finally to the Early Minoan Period, c. 2000 BC. The results of this ground breaking project have been presented in 7 international exhibitions, starting with the National Archaeological Museum in Athens in 1999. It is the most widely travelled exhibition of Greek artefacts ever mounted. This volume gives the reader the ultimate "story within the story": the primary scientific evidence behind the work that has been carried out up to 2003. It has been written by the world renowned scientists who carried out the work.

Gounouilhou, Bordeaux, 1867, 2 ff., LXII-620 pp. avec une planche en couleur (fac-simile de l'écriture du Livre des Bouillons) Rare exemplaire de l'édition originale, publiée sur beau papier vergé. Etat satisfaisant (accroc restauré en coiffe sup., mq. une pièce de titre, dos frotté, très bon état intérieur). Le "Livre des Bouillons " est un manuscrit remarquable des archives de l'ancienne Jurade bordelaise, commencé au XVe siècle, et achevé au début du XVIe siècle. Orné d'initiales peintes et illustrées reproduites en noir (dans le présent exemplaire, les 45 lettrines répétées tout au long de l'ouvrage ont été dessinées par Léo Drouyn), il contient la majeure partie des chartes de la ville de Bordeaux et des privilèges octroyés aux Bordelais par les ducs d'Aquitaine (et rois d'Angleterre) du XIIIe siècle au XVe siècle. On joint une lettre autographes signée de Jouffroy d'Eschavannes, datée d'août 1852 (adressée à un M. Salmon, à Sens sur Yonne) : "Vous m'avez faut l'honneur de m'écrire il y a deux mois pour me demander si j'avais publié l'album héraldique annoncé en 1848 et je vous prie d'excuser le retard de ma réponse qui tient à une assez longue absence de Paris. les événements qui ont eu lieu depuis quatre ans n'ont guère permis de se livrer à ce genre d'ouvrage. La situation étant aujourd'hui différente, je me propose, avant peu, de donner suite à mon projet. Je ne commencerait cependant qu'après m'être assuré d'un certain nombre de souscripteurs. 126 pages. This little book takes its title from a daily feature which appeared in the Montreal Gazette. The artist depicts a fair cross-section of the life of any big city. His characters are nameless, ordinary people going about the exhausting business of living. The daily aggravations of crowded street cars, jostling pedestrians, rude motorists, sardine housing, and assorted tribulations only affect Moore's funny bone. Author is a Toronto native who moved to Montreal at an early age. Book is well-used with above average wear and soiling but remains intact... and enjoyable.
