Complete with a gorgeous richly embossed peacock pattern to the front board and to the spine. All edges gilt. Rather like the Jane Austen Pride and Prejudice 'peacock' binding which from memory was also published by Macmillan. The tail of the spine a little bumped as is the lower front board corner. A slight bump to the head of the spine. A near contemporaneous 1903 neat black gift ink inscription to the head of the half-title page. Copy of William Henry Sedley Smith 1806-1872 with his pencil signature on free front endpaper. Bound with the first American editions of Thomas Love Peacocks works:"Headlong Hall" was Peacock's first novel originally published in England in 1815. Set at a Welsh country manor it is peopled by a set of characters each embodying a particular intellectual obsession and is replete with comic and satirical elements. "Nightmare Abbey" originally published in England in 1818 was Peacock's most famous and enduring work filled with gothic motifs like shadowy manor houses with secret rooms and sliding panels. In point of fact the book is a series of satirical romances poking fun at some the major figures of the Romantic Movement; Byron appears as Mr. Cypress Coleridge Mr. Floskey and Shelley Scythrop Glowry. Smith was an actor and stage manager who first appeared in the United States at the Walnut Street Theatre in Philadelphia in 1827. Peacock assembles a group of eccentrics each with a single monomaniacal obsession and derives humour and social satire from their various interactions and conversations. Nightmare Abbey 1891. Following the fortunes of Christopher Glowry a morose widower who lives with his only son Scythrop in the isolated family mansion Nightmare Abbey in Lincolnshire. The work makes fun of contemporary literary trends. In the original full cloth binding. Externally smart with light rubbing to the extremities and fading to the spine and board edges. The odd mark to the boards. Internally firmly bound. Pages are very bright with the odd small spot. Light age toning to the endpapers with a contemporary ink inscription to the front endpaper.
