The story centers around a Cuban aristocrat's daughter who bears Black lineage and her love affair with a wealthy white man born of a prejudiced family. Demetre was born in Savannah Georgia to a Greek family. The vast Black population of Savannah as well as her family's immigrant past likely shaped the themes of forbidden love and racial tropes during the pre-civil rights era South.
