Complete in ten volumes. Large paper edition limited to one hundred copies of which this is number twenty-nine. With a frontispiece to each volume. A collection of works written by Thomas Love Peacock an English novelist poet and official of the East India Company. Peacock is noted for his satirical novels each with the same basic setting: characters at a table discussing and criticising the philosophical opinions of the day. Edited by Richard Garnett a British scholar librarian biographer and poet who was keeper of printed books at British Museum from 1890 to 1899. This set contains: Calidore & Miscellanea 1891. Being a collection of shorter works including Calidore: A Fragment of an Unfinished Romance The Four Ages of Poetry and Horae Dramaticae I-III amongst others. Crochet Castle 1891. Peacock assembles a group of eccentrics each with a single monomaniacal obsession and derives humour and social satire from their various interactions and conversations at Crochet Hall. Gryll Grange 1891. Complete in two volumes. The author's final novel beginning with a discussion around the dinner table of Mr. Gryll in which his friend the genial gourmet the Rev. Dr. Opimian holds forth on misnomers fish and the contemporary fashion for lectures. Headlong Hall 1891. As four visitors arrive at Headlong Hall they find further guests and are lead through a series of dinners and Christmas celebrations by Squire Headlong. Maid Marian 1891. A novella set against the backdrop of medieval England focusing on themes of romance adventure and social justice. Following noble Matilda Fitzwater and her intended the Earl of Huntingdon who is embroiled in conflict with the king's authority. Melincourt 1891. Complete in two volumes. A satirical novel in which an orangutan called Sir Oran Haut-ton is put forward as a candidate for election as a Member of Parliament. The Misfortunes of Elphin 1891. A short historical romance set in sixth century Wales which recounts the adventures of the bard Taliesin the princes Elphin ap Gwythno Seithenyn ap Seithyn and King Arthur. Nightmare Abbey 1891. A novella which makes good-natured fun of contemporary literary trends. It follows the fortunes of Christopher Glowry a morose widower who lives with his only son Scythrop in the isolated family mansion Nightmare Abbey. In the original full cloth binding. Externally smart with light rubbing to the extremities and fading to the spines and board edges. The odd small mark. Internally firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean. A collection of four novels by noted nineteenth-century writer and close friend of Percy Blysshe Shelley Thomas Love Peacock. Including the following works: Headling Hall originally published in 1816 and set on the country estate of Squire Harry Headling Ap-Rhaiader Esq. in Wales. Nightmare Abbey originally published in 1818 and provides a satire of nineteenth-century literary trends. Maid Marian originally published in 1822 and set in twelfth century England. Crotchet Castle originally published in 1831 and focuses on a group of eccentrics used to derive humour and social satire from Victorian interactions. All of these works have been bound together and form Volume LVII of the Standard Novels library published by Richard Bentley. Including an engraved frontispiece and a vignette title page. Collated and complete.This was the personal copy of English writer and founding member of the Bloomsbury Group Lytton Strachey noted by his bookplate to the verso of the front free-endpaper. Strachey is most known for establishing a form of biography which uses psychological insight and sympathy along with irreverence to create a unique depiction of an individual's life. He was awarded the James Tait Black Memorial Prize for his biography of Queen Victoria 1921. In the original cloth binding. Externally some shelf wear to the boards and bumping to the head and tail of the spine and extremities. Slight fading to the spine and extremities. Cloth is split to the head of the front joint and the tail of the rear joint. Bookplate of Lytton Strachey to the verso of the front free-endpaper. Internally front hinge has failed exposing the interior of the spine. A few spots to the pages which are otherwise generally bright and clean. Good Only Richard Bentley hardcover

Ink ownership signature of Love Maria Whitcomb and small and attractively printed bookplate of her husband â€œDr. F. L. H. Willisâ€ on the front free endpaper or flyleaf of each volume. Modest wear to the edges and joints at the spine ends overall scattered foxing and some staining one volume VI lacks the front flyleaf a very good set.<br /> <br /> An early American edition of Shakespeareâ€™s Plays the first American edition was published in 1795-96 from the library of Frederick L. H. Willis and Love Whitcomb both of whom were leading exponents of the American Spiritualist movement. Frederick Willis was raised in the same household as Louisa May Alcott and her sisters and had developed a close relationship to Bronson Alcott. According to Alcott Memoirs compiled from Willisâ€™s biographical writings he provided the inspiration for the character Laurie in Little Women. Expelled from Harvard Divinity School in 1857 for his involvement with spiritualism Willis earned a medical degree moved to Rochester to work as a physician and taught at the New York Medical College for Women. Love Whitcomb came from a long line of Unitarian pastors in New Hampshire. A writer and musician Whitcomb edited Tiffanyâ€™s Monthly Magazine wrote for The Banner of Light a Spiritualist journal and composed several songs and hymns for the movement.<br /> <br /> A handsome set of nice American bindings featuring Willisâ€™s bookplates with ornamental borders and an interesting association with the Alcott family of New England.
