Nightmare Abbey originally published in 1818 and provides a satire of nineteenth-century literary trends. Maid Marian originally published in 1822 and set in twelfth century England. Crotchet Castle originally published in 1831 and focuses on a group of eccentrics used to derive humour and social satire from Victorian interactions. All of these works have been bound together and form Volume LVII of the Standard Novels library published by Richard Bentley. Including an engraved frontispiece and a vignette title page. Collated and complete.This was the personal copy of English writer and founding member of the Bloomsbury Group Lytton Strachey noted by his bookplate to the verso of the front free-endpaper. Strachey is most known for establishing a form of biography which uses psychological insight and sympathy along with irreverence to create a unique depiction of an individual's life. He was awarded the James Tait Black Memorial Prize for his biography of Queen Victoria 1921. In the original cloth binding. Externally some shelf wear to the boards and bumping to the head and tail of the spine and extremities. Slight fading to the spine and extremities. Cloth is split to the head of the front joint and the tail of the rear joint. Bookplate of Lytton Strachey to the verso of the front free-endpaper.
