For those interested in understanding significant changes that occur between major reissuances of federal regulations the availability of a dozen changes that were made over about a decade provides a roadmap of sorts to understanding the drivers of change as well as the documentation of specific regulatory changes. Mechanics Mercantile Library of San Francisco. Library markings include white call number on the backstrip a bookplate inside front cover a perforated stamp on title-leaf and a few rubber stamped dates or "not for circulation" statements on a few other pages. No jacket as published. Pages 131-132 contain a carryover paragraph titled "Untreated Syphillis in the Negro" which described the ongoing Tuskegee study and made it quite clear that the study included a group getting "adequate treatment" and a group getting "no treatment." Despite the development of highly effective treatment with penicillin by 1947 this infamous study continued to leave one group untreated to study the effects of the disease until 1972 when the implications of the study were finally brought to the attention of the broader public. The volume reflects distinctly 19th-century attitudes about health and hygiene promoting the curative values of sea and mountain air and warning of the dangers of excessive exercise during menstruation.
