To gather information for the novel, Sinclair spent seven weeks undercover working in the meat packing plants of Chicago. These direct experiences exposed the horrific conditions in the U.S. meat packing industry. Sinclair was extremely active in socialist politics throughout his life. His novel “Dragon's Teeth” on the rise of Nazisms won him the Pulitzer Prize. In 1967, a year before his death, Sinclair was invited to the white House by president Lyndon Johnson to witness the singing of the wholesome Meat Act of 1967, which expanded the earlier Meat Inspection Act of 1906.
