br. Che cosa si intende per disturbi dissociativi della coscienza? Che rapporto hanno con la memoria? Che cos'è la trance da possessione patologica? Forse essi lo troveranno, e probabilmente a ragione, troppo "filosofico". Tuttavia solo essi, e non i filosofi, possono trovare di fronte ai malati, ispirandosi a qualcuna delle idee esposte in questo lavoro, l'occasione di mettere in evidenza dei dati nuovi. Il fatto è che questo trattato, per quanto possa apparire filosofico, è nato a contatto diretto con i pazienti. E se, per certi versi, sembra allontanarsi dall'aspetto puramente medico della psichiatria, lo fa in virtù del principio che, di fronte a una certa categoria di fenomeni, dobbiamo estrarne tutto quello che essi possono darci quanto a dati essenziali; e anche in virtù della convinzione che ogni conoscenza e ogni ricerca non possono fare a meno di produrre prima o poi da se stesse il proprio frutto, senza che si debba fin dall'inizio concentrare gli sforzi su questo punto. brossura La psicopatia è un disturbo deviante dello sviluppo, caratterizzato da un'eccessiva quantità di aggressività istintuale e dall'assenza della capacità relazionale oggettuale di creare legami. La psicopatia è un processo, un'interazione continua di fattori e operazioni che stanno implicitamente progredendo o regredendo verso uno specifico punto finale e una fondamentale disidentificazione con l'umanità. L'autore fornisce una concezione dell'eziologia di questo disturbo che abbraccia dimensioni psicobiologiche e psicoanalitiche. Con questo duplice orientamento, l'autore ci accompagna lungo un percorso attraverso il quale visitiamo un patrimonio di contributi rilevanti e aggiornati provenienti dalla neurobiologia e dalla neuropsicologia. Ci viene poi presentata una ricca, estensiva e profonda indagine di un ampio spettro di formulazioni psicosociali e psicoanalitiche. Una delle idee più originali espressa in questo libro riguarda la distinzione tra aggressività evocata affettivamente, che è la più comune in ognuno di noi, e l'aggressività predatoria, che sembra essere il segno caratteristico della psicopatia. Un'altra scoperta importante è che i pazienti psicopatici sperimentano una caratteristica iporeattività del sistema nervoso autonomo periferico; per compensare, possono perseguire manifestazioni affettive aggressive. "L'aggressività predatoria, anche se non androgenodipendente, può essere innescata socialmente dalla ricerca da parte dello psicopatico di aumentati livelli di eccitazione autonomica e dell'aggressività affettiva". Su questa scia, lo psicopatico può agire comportamenti violenti per amplificare la propria eccitazione sessuale. Questa iporeattività autonomica sembra anche essere la causa della difficoltà dello psicopatico ad apprendere dall'esperienza e a sviluppare capacità di insight.

Dr. Payne earned the degree of Bachelor of Philosophy at the University of Chicago and that of Master of Arts at Columbia University. In 1917 he served as executive secretary of the Military Training Commission in New York. In 1918 he was director of the United States War Department surveys. He pursued advanced studies at Harvard where he was made a Doctor of Education.
