L'idea di attingere alla sapienza dei poeti per scandagliare gli aspetti clinici e psicopatologici delle malattie mentali è stata suggerita da Freud oltre un secolo fa, evocando le parole di Amleto ad Orazio che si mostrava dubbioso davanti all'apparizione del fantasma del Re: "I poeti sono alleati preziosi, e la loro testimonianza deve essere presa in attenta considerazione, giacché essi sono soliti sapere una quantità di cose fra cielo e terra che la nostra filosofia neppure sospetta". Numerosi classici della letteratura vengono decostruiti, scandagliati, scomposti nei loro aspetti più espressivi e formali in nome di un unico desiderio: far emergere la dimensione del reale per giungere ad una più profonda cognizione del disagio psichico. Le impurità, le imperfezioni, le ambiguità presenti nel testo, nella trama, nei personaggi, irriducibili a un inquadramento nosografico, a un ordine logico, a un ragionamento basato su un rigido sapere, consentono in molti casi di avviare un lavoro di riflessione teorica e clinica svincolata dalla ricerca del messaggio nascosto nell'opera e del fantasma inconscio dell'autore.
