1983FLAHIVE-813Stein & Day New York 1983 A fine copy in a fine jacket. A clean tight copy with price $16.95 intact on front flap. This title though purported to be written by the famously "passionate" Cora Pearl "Grand Horizontal" was actually written by Derek Parker a former chairman of the Society of Authors who admittedly used the pseudonym "William Blatchford" to carry out the hoax. "Grand Horizontal" was published in 1983 claiming to be the lost erotic memoirs of Cora Pearl. but the attribution was a hoax. The Scholars treat the book today as erotic fiction and warn that Parker's approach frames Pearl as a literary object rather than re-creating her own voice. Cora Pearl born Eliza Emma Crouch c. 1836-1886 was a celebrated English courtesan who rose to fame in Paris during the Second Empire known for her lavish lifestyle theatrical entrances and relationships with powerful men. She left behind genuine memoirs published in 1886 shortly before her death which offer a more restrained and self-aware account than the later fabricated "Grand Horizontal.". 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. Stein & Day, New York hardcover
