199983817c1999. Presumed one of a number of multiple originals. Matryoshka. Very good. Approximately 6.5 inches tall and 3.25 inches wide. Andrew Morton's Monica's Story was published in early 1999 and as its cover is prominently displayed on the outer Bill Clinton doll. Thus 1999 is used as the date that this doll was produced. A political sex scandal involving US President Bill Clinton and 24-year-old White House intern Monica Lewinsky took place in 1998. Their sexual relationship lasted between 1995 and 1997. Clinton ended a televised speech in late January 1998 with the statement that he "did not have sexual relations with that woman Ms. Lewinsky." Further investigation led to charges of perjury and to the impeachment of Bill Clinton in 1998 by the U.S. House of Representatives. He was subsequently acquitted on all impeachment charges of perjury and obstruction of justice in a 21-day Senate trial. Clinton was held in civil contempt of court by Judge Susan Webber Wright for giving misleading testimony in the Paula Jones case regarding Lewinsky and was also fined $90000 by Wright. His license to practice law was suspended in Arkansas for five years; shortly thereafter he was disbarred from presenting cases in front of the United States Supreme Court. In addition to Monica Lewinsky there are dolls representing Paula Jones Gennifer Flowers and First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton. Gennifer Flowers born January 24 1950 nicknamed "Buffles" by schoolmates is an American author singer model actress former State of Arkansas employee and former TV journalist. In 1998 President Bill Clinton testified under oath that he had had a sexual encounter with Flowers. Matryoshka dolls also known as babushka dolls stacking dolls nesting dolls Russian tea dolls or Russian dolls are a set of wooden dolls of decreasing size placed one inside another. The name matryoshka literally "little matron" is a diminutive form of the Russian female first name "Matryona" or "Matryosha". A set of matryoshkas consists of a wooden figure which separates at the middle top from bottom to reveal a smaller figure of the same sort inside which has in turn another figure inside of it and so on. The first Russian nested doll set was made in 1890 by wood turning craftsman and wood carver Vasily Zvyozdochkin from a design by Sergey Malyutin who was a folk crafts painter at Abramtsevo. Traditionally the outer layer is a woman dressed in a sarafan a long and shapeless traditional Russian peasant jumper dress. The figures inside may be of any gender; the smallest innermost doll is typically a baby turned from a single piece of wood. Much of the artistry is in the painting of each doll which can be very elaborate. The dolls often follow a theme; the themes may vary from fairy tale characters to Soviet leaders. In the west matryoshka dolls are often referred to as babushka dolls babushka meaning "grandmother" or "old woman". In the late 1980s and early 1990s during Perestroika freedom of expression allowed the leaders of the Soviet Union to become a common theme of the matryoshka with the largest doll featuring then-current leader Mikhail Gorbachev. These became very popular at the time affectionately earning the nickname of a Gorba or Gorby the namesake of Gorbachev. With the periodic succession of Russian leadership after the collapse of the Soviet Union newer versions would start to feature Russian presidents Boris Yeltsin Vladimir Putin and Dmitry Medvedev. Most sets feature the current leader as the largest doll with the predecessors decreasing in size. The remaining smaller dolls may feature other former leaders such as Leonid Brezhnev Nikita Khrushchev Joseph Stalin Vladimir Lenin and sometimes several historically significant Tsars such as Nicholas II and Peter the Great. Yuri Andropov and Konstantin Chernenko rarely appear due to the short length of their respective terms. Some less-common sets may feature the current leader as the smallest doll with the predecessors increasing in size usually with Stalin or Lenin as the largest doll.<br/> Some sets that include Yeltsin preceding Gorbachev were made during the brief period between the establishment of President of the RSFSR and the collapse of the Soviet Union as both Yeltsin and Gorbachev were concurrently in prominent government positions. During Medvedev's presidency Medvedev and Putin may both share the largest doll due to Putin still having a prominent role in the government as Prime Minister of Russia. As of Putin's re-election as the fourth President of Russia Medvedev will usually succeed Yeltsin and preceded Putin in stacking order due to Putin's role solely as the largest doll. An excellent documentary on the creation of the classic musical with interviews with a number of the original participants. From the library of Leueen MacGrath 1914-1992 the former wife of George S. Kaufman who directed the original Broadway production of Guys and Dolls presented to her by the producers of the documentary. MacGrath was a playwright and scriptwriter and film and theatre actress. She was married to the British film director Desmond Davis and subsequently the American writer George S. Kaufman. She was married to Kaufman for 8 years from 1949 during which time she collaborated with him on various plays and scripts including the 'book' for Cole Porter's 'Silk Stockings' and "Fancy Meeting You Again'. MacGrath appeared in productions produced by Joseph Chaikin. Her career was launched in 1936 with an enchanting performance in Terrence Rattigan's "French Without Tears" and she appeared with Alec Guinness in John Mortimer's autobiographical play "A Voyage Round My Father. Circa1925. 4 small colourful sheets each with female paper dolls and their accompanying Japanese and western costume front and rear views and their possessions. 20.7 x 14.5cm a little staining on reverse but nonetheless very good copies. A delightful series of Japanese paper dolls with colourfully printed kimono and Western dresses printed on 4 sheets. Kimono and dresses can be separated along perforated lines. Other accessories for girls such as bags umbrellas and musical instruments are included. The dolls may change their attire according to the occasion daily outings special outings such as concert performance and visits. One of the sheets shows a traditional married woman with a Japanese hairstyle kitchen utensils and a tea set. This was a time when Japanese and Western style clothing for either ordinary and special occasions were now part of Japanese society and this small group offers a charming snapshot of the imaginative play of a 1920s Japanese girl. <br> <br>Cut out omocha-e or toy prints in such good condition as these four have survived in small numbers only. . ミクニ. Plus one paper doll five dresses and three hats seemingly from another contemporary paper doll set. With the original color-printed top panel of box 11 x 7 ". Lacking the rest of the box. Some wear to box lid and to one of the three dolls. Instruction booklet creased. It is difficult to determine the completeness of the set though it seems that this example includes all three paper dolls issued. A good set of rare paper dolls and patterns with an educational slant. The instruction booklet emphasizes the educational value of these paper dolls which challenge children to use paper-cutting and collage skills to design dresses "just like the product of a real dressmaker." The booklet states that the kit provides "a new and interesting means of industrial occupation embodied in the most pleasing pastime known to childhood. They teach the child how to make dresses in just the same manner as its own little dresses are made and assist her to cultivate a really educational discrimination in the selection of material color schemes and styles."</p> Milton Bradley Co., hardcover

First edition of this remarkably rare and beloved children’s book surrounding the mystery and treasurer hunt for a 19th-century fashion doll in Peterborough NH by a young girl hidden by her ancestor in a secret room. Fashion dolls also called Queen Anne Dolls were often made of wood plaster or bisque with a fashionable hairstyle in flax or wool and dressed in miniature clothes showcasing the latest couture of the day. The most desirable dolls in the 19th-century were the French bisque dolls distributed all over Europe and were originally modeled on teen girls or adult women although these eventually changed over into child like bisque doll babies which would dominate the market from the 1860s onward. Bannon 1895-1963 was inspired to write this work while staying at the famed MacDowell Art Colony in Peterborough NH which carried a legend of a secret room in the MacDowell farmhouse. First edition of this curious and scarce illustrated children’s book in verse describing the unrequited love of a Japanese Ichimatsu doll for a lovely Parisian wax doll with flowing golden curls and subsequent rejection after he teaches himself English with an ABC primer. This book was published directly after the Japanese success in the Russo-Japanese War and at the height of the popularity of the interracial romance novels from Winnifred Eaton 1875-1954 a popular Chinese-American writer writing as Onoto Watanna a Japanese-American novelist including The Wooing of wisteria Heart of Hyacinth Love of Azalea and the very popular A Japanese Blossom published in 1906. The Ichimatsu dolls vary from copy to copy with each wearing different colour kimonos and appears to have been intended as a gift edition with box seen on the Altemus Boys and Girls’ Classics Series. Thurston fl. 1880-1941 illustrated a number of racially tinged works including When Squash-Boo found the Coco-nuts and for her well-known pirating of Helen Bannerman’s Little Black Sambo publishing a sequel in 1926 with her own illustrations. Copies complete with both original doll and gift box are quite rare.
