He was a friend collaborator and drinking companion of Thomas Rowlandson who engraved many of his prints.</p><p>Thomas Rowlandson 1757-1827 was an English artist and caricaturist of the Georgian and Regency eras noted for his ribald satire and social observation. The portrait however links the author to Geoffrey Gambado i.e. Francis Grose. In the picture a corpulent man sits in an armchair looking at the viewer through a monocle. Two books Gambado's <em>Annals of Horsemanship </em>a popular book attributed to Grose reissued with Rowlandson's engravings in 1809 and Laurence Sterne's <em>Tristam Shandy</em> are on the table next to him and a portrait of Gambado with gouty foot and crutch hangs on the wall.</p><p>Quite scarce copies held by the British Library and Oxford University.</p><p>Bound in full red morocco leather spine with five raised bands gilt title and decoration to compartments front board with 2cm scratch to leather TEG marbled endpapers book block solid. Court Album with 14 engraved portraits of female aristocrats; "Waverley Gallery" with 36 engravings of the principal female characters in Sir Walter Scott's romances; "Heath's Picturesque Annual" with extra engraved title page and 26 engravings by Ritchie after drawings by Clarkson Stanfield; "Tourist in Wales" with extra engraved title page and 49 engravings of views. ◆Bindings with minor imperfections but all solid and pleasing; occasional mild offsetting or minor marginal foxing a couple of short marginal tears to text leaves bur excellent copies internally the text clean and fresh the plates bright with fine impressions.<br /><br />These are appealing examples of the illustrated works that were so popular in the Victorian era providing readers with glimpses of the nobility images of their favorite literary characters and the opportunity to enjoy dramatic scenery from the comfort of their drawing rooms. The first two works here contain portraits of beautiful women both real society belles and heroines of bestselling romances. The latter two transport the armchair traveller to the wilds of Wales to the Austrian and Italian Alps and to the Rhine River. Although in black and white the engravings are so detailed and finely executed particularly in the use of shadow and light that both portraits and landscapes come to life. In the days before photography--much less streaming videos--books like these brought beauty and imagination into everyday lives.</p>
1826ABE-90785021091826 Faust was Goethe's most celebrated creation with international editions in his lifetime and subsequently in films and books across the world with translations in most languages. This is a complete set of the 26 engravings Moritz Retzsh produced as an illustration of Goethe's text; the book has no words in it not even a publisher or date. What it does have is a fabulous set of the original plate pulls complete with plate marks. Friedrich August Moritz Retzsch was a German painter draughtsman and etcher; much celebrated in his day. This is in a way a fine example of what would now called a graphic novel. The 26 etched pictures tell the story and words are not needed. In Germany there were many such books without words and this one in particular influenced the English Pre Raphaelites. This volume is in its original binding with a very fragile leather spine which turns around to the original marbled cover boards which are also in a fragile state. There is no title page or date and no publishing house is mentioned. The corners are leather also and the spine has five subtly raised bands and no title. A much poorer copy of this was featured in the exhibition of Pre Raphaelites at Tate Britain. My copy is considerably better but it is by no means a fine one. It has been used and looked at probably a great deal over the last 200 years or so. The leather is very worn the marbled cover boards are patinated and there is a mixture of hand written names and an inscription on the front end paper. It is very rare in any state at all because it was easily broken up so the plates could be framed. This is I must stress a complete bound full set and as such it is very rare indeed. The earlier of the two dated inscriptions states 1826; but it cannot be viewed as an accurate issue date. An edition exists which has a German title page and text but this is not one of those. It's a bit of a mystery. The exhibited copy in the Tate exhibition was inspected by me I knew one of the curators and it was also without any text. International Edition. Hardcover. About the author: "David Paul Drach aka Paul-Louis-Bernard Drach after his conversion 1791-1865 was a Catholic convert from Judaism and librarian of the College of Propaganda in Rome. Drach received his early education from his father who was a rabbi. After spending some time in various Talmudic schools he became a teacher at Rappoltsweiler though only sixteen years of age. The love of the secular sciences brought him to Paris where he was welcomed by his coreligionists and became tutor in a wealthy Jewish family. His reputation as a teacher brought him Christian pupils; and this may have had some influence on his subsequent conversion; in fact he had always manifested some leaning toward Christianity. Drach had already begun the study of Greek and Latin so as to become acquainted with the Christian doctrines in their original sources. Struck by the accusation of some of the Fathers that the Jews had corrupted the Hebrew text he began a comparative study of the Hebrew and the Septuagint which study he continued in spite of the remonstrances of the president of the Central Consistory. Drach was received into the Catholic faith in 1823 together with his two daughters and his son Paul who afterward became a priest and a distinguished Biblical scholar. The raven sitting on a bust of Pallas the goddess of wisdom seems to further instigate his distress with its constant repetition of the word "Nevermore". The poem makes use of a number of folk and classical references. Poe claimed to have written the poem very logically and methodically.
