14685Collection of three original steel engravings of the Castle of the Sultan of Aden at Lahadj 2 Arabian men shaking hands and a camel on a voyage titled: "Chateau Du Saltan d'Aden a Lahadj" "Salut des Arabes" & "Chameau scelle pour le Voyage" from Picturesque Universe published by Firmin Didot in 1847. Size: 5" x 8.2." The first engraving shows a beautiful and picturesque view of the Sultan of Aden's Castle and surrounding countryside with depictions of palm trees and mountians. The second depicts a greeting between two Arab men who are seen shaking hands. And the final engraving depicts a camel in the desert. Some age related toning pin holes in the top margin and remenants of a sticker in the top right corner of first image.Third engraving with past staple marks and a 4cm paper loss along top edge not affecting image. Overall the engravings in very good condition. unknown books

001420London: Dean and Son. First edition presumed. Paper on boards. Fair. N.d. circa 1850s. Folio 13.5 by 10 inches. Not paginated 33 leaves including title page with printing on only one side per leaf. Wonderful hand-colored illustrations by unnamed artists but many with the qualiy of Tenniel. Some form part of a loose story narrative and others are part of a looser verse bond. Particularly appealing are the feline illustrations which come in several places most notably part of "The Cat Party". The leaves do not appear to have been bound in a proper order as this particular narrative moves in reverse. It is all somewhat chaotic yet charmingly so. Also a stand-out is the imagery of the "London Toy Warehouse". While some of the animal imagery is straightforward and pedestrian this is more than dominated by that which is humorous unexpected and inspired. The book was surely intended both to instruct and amuse and it is this twin objective that underlies its dual tone. The boards which are covered by illustrated paper pasted on are soiled and chewed up in the corners and the edges are rough. There are a fair number of closed tears inside near the front that were less than deftly repaired with tape some of which remains. Some soilage throughout. Still most of the imagery remains bright and appealing. <br/><br/> Dean and Son hardcover books

No. 200 of 320 copies on paper duodecimo size 49 pp. Edmund Spenser 1552/3 to 1599 is probably best known for his epic poem "The Faerie Queene" an ode to Elizabeth I. Even today he is considered one of the greatest poets of the English language. <br/><br/>This work "The Wedding Songs" is a publication uniting two works which were published a year apart both dealing with love and romance.<br/><br/>According to "Chanticleer" this is the first work of the Press to be illustrated with wood-engravings; however they go on to state that "there is no great feeling of harmony between the engravings and the type" p. 16. We find the three wood-engravings charming; Ethelbert White 1892-1972 was a founding member of the English Wood Engraving Society beginning his career with water colour but being introduced to wood-engraving in 1920. <br/><br/>___DESCRIPTION: Quarter linen white paper spine label with black lettering blue paper sides over boards fore- and bottom edges uncut the frontispiece one of three wood engravings and the only one in three colours rust green and yellow the other two only in rust; Caslon type on hand-made unbleached Arnold paper duodecimo size 7 3/8" by 4 1/2" pagination: 1-8 9-46 47 final wood-engraving 48 colophon 49 publisher's device; no. 200 of the 320 copies on paper per the colophon; per the bibliography there were 350 copies on paper there were an additional 25 copies on Japanese vellum.
