The raven sitting on a bust of Pallas the goddess of wisdom seems to further instigate his distress with its constant repetition of the word "Nevermore". The poem makes use of a number of folk and classical references. Poe claimed to have written the poem very logically and methodically. About the author: "David Paul Drach aka Paul-Louis-Bernard Drach after his conversion 1791-1865 was a Catholic convert from Judaism and librarian of the College of Propaganda in Rome. Drach received his early education from his father who was a rabbi. After spending some time in various Talmudic schools he became a teacher at Rappoltsweiler though only sixteen years of age. The love of the secular sciences brought him to Paris where he was welcomed by his coreligionists and became tutor in a wealthy Jewish family. His reputation as a teacher brought him Christian pupils; and this may have had some influence on his subsequent conversion; in fact he had always manifested some leaning toward Christianity. Drach had already begun the study of Greek and Latin so as to become acquainted with the Christian doctrines in their original sources. Struck by the accusation of some of the Fathers that the Jews had corrupted the Hebrew text he began a comparative study of the Hebrew and the Septuagint which study he continued in spite of the remonstrances of the president of the Central Consistory. Drach was received into the Catholic faith in 1823 together with his two daughters and his son Paul who afterward became a priest and a distinguished Biblical scholar. 1826ABE-90785021091826 Faust was Goethe's most celebrated creation with international editions in his lifetime and subsequently in films and books across the world with translations in most languages. This is a complete set of the 26 engravings Moritz Retzsh produced as an illustration of Goethe's text; the book has no words in it not even a publisher or date. What it does have is a fabulous set of the original plate pulls complete with plate marks. Friedrich August Moritz Retzsch was a German painter draughtsman and etcher; much celebrated in his day. This is in a way a fine example of what would now called a graphic novel. The 26 etched pictures tell the story and words are not needed. In Germany there were many such books without words and this one in particular influenced the English Pre Raphaelites. This volume is in its original binding with a very fragile leather spine which turns around to the original marbled cover boards which are also in a fragile state. There is no title page or date and no publishing house is mentioned. The corners are leather also and the spine has five subtly raised bands and no title. A much poorer copy of this was featured in the exhibition of Pre Raphaelites at Tate Britain. My copy is considerably better but it is by no means a fine one. It has been used and looked at probably a great deal over the last 200 years or so. The leather is very worn the marbled cover boards are patinated and there is a mixture of hand written names and an inscription on the front end paper. It is very rare in any state at all because it was easily broken up so the plates could be framed. This is I must stress a complete bound full set and as such it is very rare indeed. The earlier of the two dated inscriptions states 1826; but it cannot be viewed as an accurate issue date. An edition exists which has a German title page and text but this is not one of those. It's a bit of a mystery. The exhibited copy in the Tate exhibition was inspected by me I knew one of the curators and it was also without any text. International Edition. Hardcover. The first two works here contain portraits of beautiful women both real society belles and heroines of bestselling romances. The latter two transport the armchair traveller to the wilds of Wales to the Austrian and Italian Alps and to the Rhine River. Although in black and white the engravings are so detailed and finely executed particularly in the use of shadow and light that both portraits and landscapes come to life. In the days before photography--much less streaming videos--books like these brought beauty and imagination into everyday lives.</p>

He worked in Hollywood writing scenarios for two Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer films in the 1930s and played a cameo in the 1935 version of David Copperfield. As a gay man at a time when homosexual practices were illegal for men in Britain Walpole conducted a succession of intense but discreet relationships with other men and was for much of his life in search of what he saw as "the perfect friend". He eventually found one a married policeman with whom he settled in the English Lake District. Having as a young man eagerly sought the support of established authors he was in his later years a generous sponsor of many younger writers. He Became Senior Classic And Was Elected A Fellow And Tutor Of Trinity In 1830; Shortly Afterwards He Took Holy Orders. He Went For A Tour In Greece In 1832-1833 And Published Various Works On Its Topography And Archaeology The Most Famous Of Which Is "Wordsworth's" Greece 1839. 1814177240Printed for William Daniell by Thomas Davison. 1814. 17 uncoloured aquatint plates mounted on India paper tissue-guards textblock complete but front and rear boards are disbound and only a fragment of the spine remains with the stamp of the library of the University of Pennsylvania on the front paste-down and blind stamped throughout but not affecting the plates. Marbled endpapers all edges gilt slight water stains to some pages edges browned but the plates are clean. 42.5 x 33.5cm. A very good example of Orientalist art. Robert Smirk 1752. Exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1786 became an associate in 1792 and in the same year an academician. Most of his paintings are small.Those for the story of the Hunch-back engraved by Daniell were in his happiest manner. He died in London 1845. Six folio plates. In very good condition some of the plates and tissues have a little edgewear or minor light soiling in no case effecting the printed images.
