001420London: Dean and Son. First edition presumed. Paper on boards. Fair. N.d. circa 1850s. Folio 13.5 by 10 inches. Not paginated 33 leaves including title page with printing on only one side per leaf. Wonderful hand-colored illustrations by unnamed artists but many with the qualiy of Tenniel. Some form part of a loose story narrative and others are part of a looser verse bond. Particularly appealing are the feline illustrations which come in several places most notably part of "The Cat Party". The leaves do not appear to have been bound in a proper order as this particular narrative moves in reverse. It is all somewhat chaotic yet charmingly so. Also a stand-out is the imagery of the "London Toy Warehouse". While some of the animal imagery is straightforward and pedestrian this is more than dominated by that which is humorous unexpected and inspired. The book was surely intended both to instruct and amuse and it is this twin objective that underlies its dual tone. The boards which are covered by illustrated paper pasted on are soiled and chewed up in the corners and the edges are rough. There are a fair number of closed tears inside near the front that were less than deftly repaired with tape some of which remains. Some soilage throughout. Still most of the imagery remains bright and appealing. Dean and Son unknown

As issued in paste-paper over boards bound by Elizabeth Kner with printed paper title label on the front cover; partially unopened. 16 in-text engravings from Bewick's blocks printed in brown grace the pages of the charming volume. Light rubbing to the extremities of the binding including a scuffed spot on the front board; interior is fine. Designed by Joseph C. Graves this is the second issue with his imprint though Graves's friend Philip Reed executed the presswork at his Chicago print shop. Graves ran the Gravesend Press as a sideline from about 1949 through to the end of his life in 1960 issuing scarcely more than half a dozen books. While less known that some of his contemporaries he took his place amidst a vibrant mid-century printing and illustrating scene—friends with Victor Hammer Carolyn Reading Philip Reed Fritz Kredel John DePol John Fass and others. H. Richard Archer in a history of Graves and his press published in The Kentucky Review Spring 1987 summarizes Graves's work thus: "All of the books whether pamphlets or bound books reflect the taste and high standards of a true amateur craftsman and as such they certainly qualify as choice examples from one of this generation's most distinguished private presses. Commissioned expressly for this work the illustrations capture Scotland's dramatic landscapes historic ruins and bustling towns at the height of Romantic fascination with the sublime and the national. Beattie a physician and poet provides historical and descriptive commentary alongside each plate weaving together antiquarian detail folklore and personal observation. The result is a richly textured portrait of Scotland its natural grandeur cultural heritage and storied past intended to stir both patriotic pride and aesthetic delight. This volume includes 41 engraved plates including a folding map and were published by George Virtue a leading figure in illustrated books of the period. Original full leather the spine with raised bands gilt ruled and gilt lettered contrasting lettering piece gilt ruled boards. The joints are cracked though the boards are still firmly attached and the corners of the boards are bumped and rubbed. The head of the spine is chipped. The leather boards are scuffed and a little rubbed. The binding is actually quite firm and sound. Vignette title page large folding map and 41 engraved plates. Occaional damp stain on some plates principally to the blank margins and more severe on the last two plates extending to the images. 200 pages. The contents are browned throughout but the text block is firm with no loose or torn pages. Size: 12 x 18 cms. Category: Antiquarian & Rare; Special Interest.
