The introduction i.e. in this work entitled "Advertisement" the translator Mr. Hurst cites two previous translations of Bede's History -- the first by Rev. Thos. Stapleton in 1565 which he says contains numerous obsolete and now 1814 "almost unintelligible". The second by Mr. John Stevens in 1723 he writes is "so literal as to appear in many places both very obscure and defective in the style." All in all Mr. Hurst claims ".this interesting and edifying history of the conversion of our own country to Christianity lies concealed from the knowledge of most people; who therefore are ignorant of the true nature of that religion which our ancestors professed."<br /> <br /> Beda Venerabilis lived from 673 to 736 and wrote this history several years before his death. There are illustrations throughout including in text and full page plates plus a full page frontispiece. Edward Bradley 18271889 was an English novelist and clergyman. He was born in Kidderminster and educated at Durham University from which he took his pen name. He wrote under the name of Cuthbert M. Bede B.A. a few novels and tales Fairy Fables 1858 Glencraggan 1861 Fotheringhay 1885 etc. His most popular book was The Adventures of Mr. Verdant Green on the experiences of an Oxford undergraduate. There was a sequel Little Mr Bouncer and his friend Verdant Green. Tales of College Life often bound with it introduces the character of Mr Affable Canary. The celebrated illustrations to the Verdant Green books were the work of the author. In a full tree calf binding with gilt stamped detailing to the spine and board edges. Both boards and all other pages are securely attached. There are two bookplates to the front pastedown. Apart from some mild cracking to the spine area the extremities are in very good condition. The binding is slightly loose with the marbled and blank front endpapers being detached but present. Edward Bradley was an English clergyman and novelist mainly known for his book The Adventures of Mr Verdant Green concerning an undergraduate of Oxford. Rebound in half calf over cloth covered boards gilt tooling to spine renewed endpapers. Externally smart with minor shelf wear light chipping to head of spine boards only lightly marked. You will serve the whole of it letterpress engraved. I made a note of it - "cucklen bch" - some time since in N.&Q. Believe me Very truly yours Edward Bradley". A PS concerning his son Cuthbert indirectly dates the letter to 1880. Cuthbert became a prolific painter of the British fox hunting scene. In the PS the father writes of his son's sketch appearing in "The Illustrated Sporting and Dramatic News". Since the letter has Cuthbert as 19 at the time the sketch was an early work. .
