Nebenbei war er Leibarzt österreichischer Berühmtheiten und nicht zuletzt des Kaisers Franz Joseph I.; zu seiner Zeit zählte er zu den bedeutendsten Chirurgen ganz Österreichs (ausführlich Wikipedia).

Contemporary black half morocco, spine titled in gilt, corners and joints slightly rubbed, some foxing at the beginning and occasional minor light foxing in the text, however, the fine plates are clean and overall a very good copy. A superbly illustrated comprehensive treatise on dislocations and fractures, with an historical introduction by Professor A. Velpeau, "the leading French surgeon of the first half of the nineteenth century" (Garrison-Morton), who had been Benjamin Anger's teacher. The 100 magnificently lifelike plates, each depicting a different type of dislocation, fracture or complication, were drawn by Bion, L?veill? and Beau. This work is inexplicably absent from the standard medical bibliographies. Provenance: From the library of J. Kirkup with his bookplate on a front endpaper and a few pencil notes.

Black leather spine, four raised bands, gilt titles, green and brown marbled paper-covered boards and endpapers. Light wear to spine tips and boards. Very clean inside, one short name to the title-page. Text in French. Illustrated in black & white with some photographs of medical deformities requiring surgery. This is Tome Troisieme, the third volume, published in 1895. Again this is not one of the modern reprints. Table of contents. List of authors at end. 10" high X 6" wide, 449 pages. L'illustration comprend un frontispice représentant une consultation chez le chirurgien et une gravure à pleine page figurant la botte orthopédique mise au point par l'auteur. Le chirurgien Francisco Arcaeo (Franciscus Arcaeus, 1493-1580), surnommé l'Ambroise Paré espagnol, divise son ouvrage en deux livres ; le premier est consacré à la chirurgie et à la médecine, notamment à la chirurgie crânienne et aux blessures au visage, à la syphilis et aux ulcères ; le second constitue un important Antidotario - ou liste de ressources pharmacologiques -, qui se termine sur huit chapitres concernant les fièvres. Le chapitre le plus notable est celui que l'auteur consacre aux soins à apporter aux enfants atteints d'une difformité du pied les rendant boiteux, qui sera nommée ultérieurement le pied-bot : il rapporte le cas d'un enfant de Llerena qu'il traita avec succès. En préparation, il recommande l'application d'une pommade et des bains chauds. L'opération intervient 30 jours après : avec l'aide d'un assistant, le chirurgien disloque le pied boiteux de toutes ses forces, en essayant de le placer dans sa position correcte. Le pied est bandé dans des linges fins imprégnés de compositions détaillées et enfin placé dans un "instrument" de son invention ; la botte orthopédique représentée en page 173, dont il explique scrupuleusement la fabrication. Avec Paré, Arcaeo fut pionnier dans le traitement de cette affection et dans la fabrication d'une chaussure spécifiquement dédiée. Pourtant, son nom est tombé dans l'oubli, tandis que celui de son homologue français est passé à la postérité. Ses origines familiales - il était juif converti - semblent expliquer qu'il n'ait pas joui de la renommée méritée. Il est probablement né à Fregenal de la Sierra, en Estrémadure. Il étudia à l'Université d'Alcalá de Henares et à Guadalupe. Il exerça la médecine à Llerena, où il reçut notamment l'érudit Arias Montano, qui l'encouragea à publier son traité et qui y rédigea deux textes courts. L'ouvrage se diffusa rapidement en Europe ; en 1588, il est traduit en anglais (Londres, Thomas East), puis en allemand en 1600. Des traductions françaises et néerlandaises plus tardives, parues en 1634 et 1667, attestent de son importance pendant tout le XVIIe siècle. "Undoubtedly, he is one of those figures in the history of science who, during the Renaissance, anticipated modernity (...). In this respect, the figure and work of Arceo should continue to be examined in greater depth and promoted, given the stature of the man. For example, his pharmacological knowledge could lead to great surprises given the existing scientific evidence in herbal medicine" (Ramón Vallejo, Mesa, Cobos-Bueno).
