Dopo aver studiato per qualche anno le trasfusioni da uomo a uomo e da animale a uomo, ottenne un posto di lettore ordinario di anatomia e chirurgia nel 1668, poco prima della redazione di questo racconto di una dissezione, volume che, nel suo stile, accorda “un approccio strettamente dimostrativo con uno più tradizionalmente retorico-filosofico” (DBI, sub vocem) Paolo Manfredi (1640-1716), born in Lucca, lived in Rome where he was a student at the Collegio Romano and then at La Sapienza University, where he devoted himself to medicine. After having studied some years the blood transfusion (even the animal-to-man one), he obtained a chair as a teacher in anatomy and surgery in 1668, before drafting this dissection tale, a volume that, in Manfredi’s style, is written halfway between demonstration and philosophy (see Dbi, sub vocem)

In 4° (26,7x19 cm); tre tomi in un volume: XXIV, 552 pp., XVIII, (1), 936 pp., VII, (1), 190, (2) pp. Legatura coeva in tutta tela azzurra con titolo su fascetta in pelle in oro. Le prime 10 carte del primo volume non sono mai state tagliate e fuoriescono di un millimetro dalla legatura. Alcune sottolineature a matita rossa nelle prime 20 pagine del testo,qualche piccola ed insignificante macchiolina di foxing in poche pagnie e nel complesso esemplare in buone-ottime condizioni di conservazione. Prima edizione italiana di questo importante studio completamente dedicato alla chirurgia e all'anatomia chirurgica, illustrato da centinaia di foto e disegni, opera del più celebre medico militare francese della prima parte del XX° secolo Robert Picque. Nato a Parigi nel 1877, entrò nella Scuola di Servizio Sanitario Militare di Lione. Pubblicò quest'opera nel 1913 dopo che nello stesso anno aveva ottenuto una cattedra nell'Università di Bordeaux. Durante la prima guerra mondiale seppur in congedo organizza quello che è considerato il più famoso campo medico avanzato della Prima Guerra Mondiale a Beaurieux piccolo villaggio nella parte più orientale del Chemin des Dames. Fu tra i primi organizzatori del sistema di evacuazione aeronautica dei degenti gravi. Morì in circostanze tragiche cadendo da un aereo in fiamme nel 1927. Prima edizione di grande importanza nella storia della chirurgia.

Prima ed unica rarissima edizione, un solo esemplare censito in ICCU, di questo trattato medico-andrologico del celebre chirurgo fiorentino, Lorenzo Nannoni. L'opera qui presentata è il debutto letterario dell'autore a differenza di quello che comunemente si crede e che cioè il suo primo scritto edito sia stato "Una dissertazione sulla cateratta" edito nel 1780. Il "Trattato sull'idrocele" scritto dal Nannoni in inglese ma edito per la prima volta con questa edizione, analizza i diversi metodi di cura chirurgica dell'idrocele, con preferenza netta per l'incisione descritta da Aulo Cornelio Celso. Lorenzo Nannoni ebbe la fortuna di nascere in una famiglia in cui la chirurgia era radicata da generazioni. Nacque a Firenze nel 1749. Suo padre era uno dei chirurghi più in vista dell' epoca. Ricevette un'ottima educazione fin dagli anni dei primi studi elementari. A dimostrazione del suo costante impegno profuso nell'apprendimento e nel conseguimento dei suoi obiettivi, non appena si laureò, ottenne subito un posto di lavoro in cui praticare la sua professione di chirurgo. Nel 1776, non appena laureato, ricevette la carica di chirurgo sostituto dell'Ospedale di Santa Maria degli Innocenti a Firenze. Dopo aver assolto questo impegno con grande applicazione, ottenne dal granduca Pietro Leopoldo l'autorizzazione a viaggiare per l'Europa, insieme ad altri medici quali Felice Fontana, Giovanni Fabbroni e Giorgio Santi, con lo scopo di apprendere le nuove tecniche chirurgiche che erano in via di perfezionamento. Fece quindi tappa sia in Francia che in Inghilterra. Una volta tornato in Italia fu chiamato a ricoprire il posto di Lettore e Dimostratore d'Operazioni Chirurgiche. Nel 1780 iniziò a lavorare come chirurgo nell'Ospedale vecchio di San Giovanni di Dio. Prese il posto di Natale Carloni. Nel 1790 il padre, Angelo Nannoni mancò, e il granduca Pietro Leopoldo, appena appresa la notizia, lo designò come erede del posto paterno di Lettore e dimostratore d'Operazioni chirurgiche presso l'Arcispedale di Santa Maria Nuova. La sua attività di chirurgo e scrittore fu interrotta dal sopraggiungere della morte, che lo colpì il 14 agosto 1812, all' età di 63 anni.
