In 2013, the Museum of Contemporary Photography commissioned American photographer Michael Schmelling to make a new series of photographs about music in his hometown of Chicago. First shown as the solo exhibition Your Blues in 2014 (curated by Karen Irvine), this ambitious body of work now takes form of an artist book, co-published by The Ice Plant and Skinnerboox. Schmelling spent eighteen months immersed in the project, crisscrossing Chicago alone at night, making his way into basement shows, crowded clubs, parties, and recording studios ("waiting in the dark for a communal experience with strangers," as he describes it), documenting both the communal culture at large — musicians and fans alike — and the DIY individualism of the characters involved. Focussing on niche and local acts in unconventional venues, Schmelling's work reflects a vibrant, fluid crossover between the region's music genres, a diffuse legacy that encompasses the blues, punk, psychedelic jazz, rap, emo, hardcore, and house music. In Chicago "there's no dominant cultural tradition," writes musician Tim Kinsella in an essay included in the book. "The dominant form is hybridity." Le fiere erotiche sono probabilmente gli unici eventi in cui tutte le classi sociali e le età sono riunite in uno stesso luogo.Le foto del libro ritraggono gli avventori della fiera che provengono tutti dalla stessa città traboccante di bigottismo. Perché da un lato c'è la tolleranza ipocrita e l'apertura notturna al mercato della carne, d'altra parte, durante il giorno, la tranquilla compiacenza svela idilli familiari e messe domenicali. Si tratta di schizo provincialismo. L'abbandono scatenato della borghesia che a prima vista sembra enorme, a un esame più attento si mantiene esattamente entro limiti definiti. Perché in questo carnevale di pulsioni rumoroso, penetrante, adrenalinico, l'eccesso è pianificato. Così tutto rimane nel migliore ordine possibile. Erotic fairs are probably the only events where all social classes and ages are gathered in the same place. The visitors – exactly from the hick town where all the pictures were shot – brim over with bigotry. Because on one hand there is the hypocritical tolerance and openness at night, the meat market – and the gazes! – under the cover of eroticism. On the other hand the smooth smugness reveals in the daytime – lived family idyll and dominical church going included. It is all about schizo provincialism. The abandon and unleashing of the bourgeois which seem enormous at first, in closer inspection keeps exactly within the defined limits. Because in this loud, piercing, adrenalized carnival of drives, the excess is planned. Like that everything is in best order. In the garden plot, on the parking lane, in the frontyard – and in fact also on the erotic fair. Shortlisted at the UNSEEN Photobook Dummy Awards in Amsterdam in 2013.
