A notoriously delicate binding this copy has glue visible along the gutters gatherings separated from spine at second free end paper name on second free end paper pen on rear flap. States 'First and Original Edition' on title-page. Shelved in Case 2. A novella covering Miller's time living as a struggling writer in Paris during the 1930s roughly during the same time that he was working on Black Spring. This first edition was published by Olympia Press in 1956 while Miller's work was still being censored in the United States. It would finally see an American release in 1965 after Miller won his obscenity case over the content of Tropic of Cancer. This 1956 edition features black and white photography by Hungarian-born photographer Brassaï Gyula Halász who Miller had elsewhere called "the eye of Paris." 1326658. Shelved Dupont Bookstore. The photogravures depict Paris and New York by night; statues at the Louvre; a circus horsewoman; parcs and gardens; the home; portraits. All with special light effects.<br /> <br /> Wrappers slightly foxed and rubbed along edges. Corners bumped thus slightly affecting pages throughout. Text in French. Wrappers in overall good interior in very good condition. Throughout the 1930s Gaston Paris 1903-1964 was one of the pillars of the weekly magazine "Vu" founded in 1928 by Lucien Vogel. The only salaried photographer he shared the magazine’s pages with Laure Albin-Guillot Germaine Krull André Kertész Martin Munkacsi Man Ray and Robert Capa. Alongside his reports and portraits of artists and celebrities of the time he produced strange photographic series inspired by surrealism work which appeared in "Detective magazine" from the 1930s to the 1950s to illustrate its stories of gangsters and femmes fatales. His archives were purchased by the Agence Roger-Viollet shortly after his death. <br /> <br /> In 1934 Pierre Boucher 1908-2000 founds with René Zuber the Alliance-Photo agency that delivers the first deontology of photography and enhances the importance of photographers’ signatures. Multidisciplinary the French photographer explores the avant-garde aesthetic with surrealist nudes photograms collages and solarizations. He also produces more commercial works illustrating advertisements and books such as Emile Allais’ French Skiing Method. <br /> <br /> Wols was the pseudonym of Alfred Otto Wolfgang Schulze 1913-1951 a German painter and photographer predominantly active in France. Though broadly unrecognized in his lifetime he is considered a pioneer of Lyrical Abstraction one of the most influential artists of the Tachisme movement. <br /> <br /> André de Diénès 1913-1985 was a Hungarian-Romanian photographer noted for his work with Marilyn Monroe and his nude photography. The short texts are essentially snapshots of Marie's life and the lives of those around her. Text in French.<br /></p><p>The book contains an admiring introduction by American writer and fellow Paris resident Henry Miller. One of 2500 copies numbered 101 to 2600 on Vélin Alfa paper. There were also 100 deluxe copies containing an original signed etching.<br /></p><p>This volume comes with a notarized letter from Thomas Marotta explaining that Brassaï had inscribed it to his wife Françoise during a visit to Brassaï's home in Paris in 1977.
