1 f. (c. 190:85 mm). With autogr. signature and papered seal. Payment receipt for the final installment for one of the earliest works in British printing history published by subscription: “Received this second day of May in the year of our Lord God 1664 of John Gill Esquire the summe of twenty shillings being the full intire payment of four pounds by him Subscribed or Promised towards the Printing of a Lexicon and Grammars of the Orientall Languages: Witnesse my hand and seal, the day and yeare above written [...]”. The receipt is filled in and signed by the theologian and Semitic scholar Dr. Edmund Castell, and the work subscribed is Castell’s life-work, the ‘Lexicon Heptaglotton’. Upon this work, “which has long challenged the admiration, and defied the competition, of foreigners; and which [...] has raised an eternal monument of literary fame” (Dibdin I, 34), Castell had been at work since 1651; it was published in two folio volumes in 1669, five years after Gill completed his payment and twelve years after the publication of Brian Walton’s six-volume polyglot Bible edition, in the preparation of which Castell had been a valuable help and to which the ‘Lexicon’ was issued as a supplement. In his DNB article on Castell, the orientalist and historian Stanley Lane-Poole recounts the story of the Lexicon’s composition, told with “sad simplicity” in the dedication to Charles II: “The eighteenth year of composition, he writes, has been reached, and that long period has been filled with unremitting toil of seldom less than sixteen or eighteen hours a day, with constant vigils, with bodily suffering [...], with loss of fortune, and finally all but the loss of sight. [...] He had scarcely any assistance. [...] He mentions three scholars who rendered him more protracted service, but these deserted him at last, even his printer mutinied, and he was left alone in his old age to finish the gigantic work. One of his assistants suddenly died, and Castell had to pay for his burial, and took charge of his orphan child. He had not only spent his life and strength; he had reduced himself to poverty by expending over 12,000 £ upon the work; and even so, he was 1,800 £ in debt, and had become responsible for some debts of his brother, for which the unfortunate scholar was sent to prison in 1667. This condition of actual distress, aggravated by the loss of much of his library and effects in the great fire, [...] at length procured him a scanty measure of royal favour. [...] Castell brought out his ‘Lexicon’ in 1669. It marks an epoch in Semitic scholarship [...], but [...] met with a deplorably cold welcome in England. The ‘London Gazette’ contains an advertisement in which the unhappy scholar states that for three-quarters of a year he or his servants have attended in London at the place of sale, but that the subscribers send so slowly for their copies that he must fix the following Lady-day as the last date of attendance. At the time of his death about five hundred copies still remained unsold, and his niece and executrix, Mrs. Crisp, lodged the remnant of her uncle’s life-work in one of her tenant’s houses at Martin in Surrey, where for some years the rats played such havoc with the learned pages that when the stock came to be examined scarcely a single copy could be made up from the wreck of the sheets, and the fragments were sold for the sum of 7 £” (III, 1180f.). - Slightly wrinkled. 1f. Oblong 8vo (ca. 240:84 mm). Blank form filled in in ink, with papered seal. Payment receipt for the fifth instalment for one of the earliest works in British printing history published by subscription, according to Dibdin (I, 23) "the first book ever published in that manner in England": "Received this [10th] day of [June] in the year of our Lord God [1656] of [Jn. Gell Esq.] the summe of [two Pounds] being the [fourth] payment of [ten pounds] by him subscribed or promised, towards the printing of the Bible in the Original & other learned Languages: Witness my hand and seal, the day and the year above written". - The Bible edition for which Gell was eventually to pay 10 pounds is the Polyglot Bible edited by Brian Walton (1660-61), "the most accurate and best equipped of the great Polyglots" (Darlow/Moule, 23). The Oxford-educated orientalist Walton drew up a scheme for the project as early as 1847: "[H]aving secured the approval of the Bishops of London, Ely, Salisbury, Rochester, Lincoln, and Exeter, in 1652 he invited subscriptions for the forthcoming Bible, and entrusted the funds to the management of a worthy London citizen, William Humble. This polyglot was one of the earliest publications printed by subscription in England" (ibid., 23f.). The "worthy London citizen" Humble, who administrated the subscription payments and in whose hand the present receipt is filled in, is in all likelihood the London bookseller of that name, whose shop "The White Horse" operated in Pope's Head Alley until 1659 (cf. Plomer, Dict. of Booksellers & Printers). - Printing commenced in 1653, and the first complete copies were issued in 1658, "though some copies were not issued till after the Restoration, 29 May 1660" (ibid., 24). As a product of Protestant theology, the Bible was included in the 'Index Librorum Prohibitorum' as early as 1663, although it "could only be used by specialists, and these could hardly do without it" (cf. Reusch II, 119). Richard Simon admitted in 1692 that it "was praised by all Catholics, even in Rome" (cf. Reusch II, 125). In his 1899 DNB article on Walton, the orientalist D. S. Margoliouth assesses the merits of the edition: "While the Polyglot was justly regarded at the time of its appearance as an honourable monument of the vitality of the church of England at a period of extreme depression, and, from its practical arrangement, has been of the greatest use to biblical students, with whom, having never been superseded, it still commands a high price, it would also seem to have been a most successful commercial speculation. Though not absolutely the first book printed by subscription in England, it was one of the earliest, and, as has been seen, liberal support was given the undertaking from the commencement; and whereas the price paid by subscription was £10, other purchasers probably paid far more; in a letter to John Buxtorf the younger at Basle, Walton puts the price at £50" (XX, 727). - Somewhat wrinkled and with minimal damage to the edges (some touching text).

Has six lines. With a legible script and fine calligraphic style. It starts with 'huve'. He was a Turkish statesman, governor and member of state council according to Sicill-i Osmânî by Süreya and Türkischer Biographischer Index. The House of Giray (Crimean Tatar: Geraylar, Turkish: Âl-i Cengiz), also Girays, were the Genghisid/Turkic dynasty that reigned in the Khanate of Crimea from its formation in 1427 until its downfall in 1783. The dynasty also supplied several khans of Kazan and Astrakhan between 1521 and 1550. Apart from the royal Girays, there was also a lateral branch, the Choban Girays (Çoban Geraylar). Before reaching the age of majority, young Girays were brought up in one of the Circassian tribes, where they were instructed in the arts of war. The Giray khans were elected by other Crimean Tatar dynasts, called myrzas (mirzalar). They also elected an heir apparent, called the qalgha sultan (qalga sultan). In later centuries, the Ottoman Sultan obtained the right of installing and deposing the khans at his will. Giray family settled in Adrianople (Edirne) city in 17th century.

4to. ½ p. An anonymous note in support of a proposal by Charles Vignoles to take over from Marc Isambard Brunel as Chief Engineer for the Thames Tunnel Company. The piece offers a tantalising insight into the in-house politicking that followed the decision to halt operations on the Tunnel after flooding in August 1828. The eight-line note consists principally of dry and somewhat ironic criticism of Brunel, his work and nationality, before a short commendation of Vignoles: "Mr. Brunel is the Engineer who has attempted he Thames Tunnel, and failed in the execution, and for this he has been appointed a Chevalier of the Legion of Honour in France. He is a Frenchman, and, by the explanation of his plans, he convinced the Royal Academy of Science that the thing might have succeeded. My friend Charles Vignoles is confident that he can complete the tunnel at less expence [!] and in a better manner". - The Thames Tunnel is recognised as having been the first successful passage under a navigable riverbed. The project, completed under Marc Brunel and his son Isambard Kingdom Brunel in 1843, served as the debut for a series of engineering innovations, including Brunel's patented tunnelling shield. Despite its revolutionary methods and significance for various fields, construction of the tunnel was subject to numerous delays and challenges: poor working conditions, gas leaks and flooding meant that work was brought to a halt after six men died on 12th January 1828. Whilst engineers sought to fix the tunnel's physical problems, the board of the Thames Tunnel Company canvassed for solutions to their financial, administrative and perceived managerial issues. In particular, the open animosity between the Company's Chairman, William Smith, and the Brunels led to the Company's directors to call a General Assembly in April 1829 to assess the situation. It was here that Vignoles' proposals for a cheaper, more efficient method to complete the tunnel were considered by an independent arbitrator. Vignoles' idea was, however, not taken up and by December 1834, Marc Brunel had secured financial support from the government's Treasury to supplement that of the original private investors. After nearly a decade of further work, the tunnel opened to the public on 25th March 1843. - The page preserves a fold down the middle presumably for insertion into an envelope (now lost). Edges have minor tears on all sides and one larger tear to the middle, not affecting the text. A second hand adds the numbers 65 and 66 to the top right-hand corner recto and verso.

242 x 390 mm. Illustration 195 x 127 mm.
Qu.-12mo. Mit eh. Adresse (Faltbrief).
