Baxter 1837-1890 Surgeon General of the U.S. Army personal physician to President James Garfield Baxter was not present at the assassination of the president in July 1881 gone fishing. He wrote some 99 entries and signed many others. James L. High American attorney wrote 29 entries and signed records of kills. One day such heavy quantities of logs came down that Baxter had to abandon fishing; on other days visible discharges of sawdust from upriver were a nuisance.

On 15 July 1887 J.M. Oliver fishing along near the end of the Island pool was threatened with violence by the Superintendant of the Restigouche Club if he didn't get over to the other side of the water. "Notwithstanding Robinson's scaring" Oliver returned to the same pool the next day and caught a 23-lb. salmon and hooked a much larger one. Discussions with members of the club Robert Goelet owner of Toadbrook Lodge and Mr. Penfold followed "They said they were advised by counsel McAllister of Campbellton that our right extended not to the thread of the stream but the middle of the water surface" and declined to "adjust" matters; a long letter was sent to the Executive Committee of the Ristigouche Club at 120 Broadway in New York.

Other anglers at the Club waters include Senators O.H. Ink on paper with pencil and watercolor drawings throughout including rural scenes and pictures of camp life 2 finely executed leaves depicting 11 and 7 named angling flies two individual drawings of flies and several watercolors of trout. 256; 276; 10 pp. 3 vols. 8vo. Accounts of mid-nineteenth century outdoor sport and holiday travel in central Pennsylvania by a an earnest and occasionally lyrical chronicler.

The first The Journal of the Ten Mile Cabin Party is a record of a trout fishing party in the summer of 1868 to a "certain secluded little dell deep in the old hemlock woods shut in on all sides by the Allegheny mountains with scarce passage way allowed for one of the brightest and most romantic little trout streams in the Pennsylvania woods." The party included Marriott the chronicler; Browny the Nimrod of the party and the artist whose neatly finished drawings punctuate the narrative; Kelley the fisherman; Pankey; and Miller. The party left the West Philadelphia railroad depot on 3 July joined for the Harrisburg leg of the trip by Charley V- "one of the best fly fishermen in Philadelphia" who was on his way to a small stream above Altoona. After delays their train crossed the Susquehanna where they saw a Fourth of July party in possession of one of the islands in the river and at last reached North Point where the wagon to take them up the creek awaited. Marriott writes simply and with an eye for scenic detail and an ear for the wit of his friends. He alludes to Dickens and quotes Dr. Bethune on the habitat of the trout fisherman: "His choice is the swift river the rock-broken stream; and he walks hopefully on from one jutting cliff to another making his fly fall lightly as a drop of snow on each turn of the wave or under the out-eaten turf or over the deep dark pool."

The second with a pictorial title of the mountains of Wyoming county Pennsylvania recounts a trout fishing trip to Bowman's Creek northwest of Scranton with companions Browny Jim Will and Tom. During their climb to Harvey's Lake several flocks of wild pigeons flew overhead and though they had but one gun between them "a long single-barrelled revolutionary looking affair" Tom was "ubiquitous." Later describing their campsite under an enormous hemlock Marriott writes "And Reader have you ever slept in a hemlock bed . The resinous odor is an agreeable one and a great promoter of sleep."

The third much shorter manuscript is the preliminary pages only of a return visit to Bowman's Creek in the summer of 1871; the party gets just beyond Bethlehem.

Remarkable group of manuscripts providing a glimpse of daily life on summer vacations long ago. unknown books
1938260500Boston: Privately Printed by Geo. H. Ellis Co 1938. First edition one of only 30 copies this copy numbered in ink "Seven. Illustrated with 28 photographs on 14 plates and 5 hand-colored plates after old prints and a photograph; with folding map tipped in on rear pastedown. 1 vols. 8vo. Original dark blue grained leatherette title gilt on upper cover. A fine fresh copy. First edition one of only 30 copies this copy numbered in ink "Seven". Illustrated with 28 photographs on 14 plates and 5 hand-colored plates after old prints and a photograph; with folding map tipped in on rear pastedown. 1 vols. 8vo. E.H. Rawls Copy. In his Foreword the author states: "These sketches were written for the members of the Moisie Salmon Club. The sole purpose was to give information to them of the waters and conditions of the Moisie River and its branches above the places customarily fished by them.". The Moisie is one of a network of navigable rivers running about 110 miles northward from the St. Lawrence in eastern Quebec; old and well worn portage paths testify to the antiquity of the route along which for hundreds of years Indians have hunted and fished. For salmon and sea trout it is one of the richest areas known. It is not surprising that the Moisie Salmon Club was founded to reap the benefits of this bounty; what is surprising is that so much care attention and expense has been lavished on a book limited to only 30 copies. The text consists primarily of the author's descriptions of areas north of the more usual fishing sites based on his explorations as a sportsman with guides. In addition to five colored plates which tend to establish the romantic mood of the region there are 28 superb reproductions of sepia photographs printed on special photographic-type paper to convey both the look and the actual feel of the originals. The book's 78 pages conclude with an Index and inside the back cover is mounted a folding map of the area described.

The book is rare not in Wetzel or Heller not seen by Bruns and the only copy we know of to appear at auction - a worn copy - brought $1870 at the Netz sale in New York in 1986.

This copy bears the ownership signature of E.H. Rawls on the front flyleaf: pages 12 to 19 comprise Edward H. Rawls' own account of his 1929 trip to the East Branch Chute and Cran Serré of the Moisie River where he was the first to take salmon on a light rod above the falls in defiance of "the old story retold until believed by everyone that salmon would rise ot the fly above the rapids". Palmer notes that Rawls' exploits prompted the club to build the Webster trail and develop the upper river.

A choice association copy. Bifolium inscribed on four sides covering guests who stayed at the hotel in the first week of September including the eight members of the Red Stockings of New York and the same number of Blue Stockings of Philadelphia identifying each by name and position: catcher first base pitcher second base right field left field and manager; with the note "Female Base Ball Club Game at 2:30 this P.M." large sheet boldly inscribed naming New York players Misses M. Stacey M. Addison T. Sheldon R. Howard K. Moore L. Gray J. Arnold & K. Taylor; and Philadelphia players Misses E. Clifford G. Lostbaum J. Howard A. Brooks M. Pierce B. Lewis M. Harding and H. Howard. Very Good with some discoloration boldly written and easily read. 17 1/2" x 11 1/4".

The following is taken from an article in the September 2 1879 issue of the Springfield Ohio Republic Times: "The party of abandoned creatures professing to give exhibitions as Female Base Ball players about the country came here yesterday Monday and after being driven around town on show proceeded to the base ball grounds on the Fair Grounds and played a few innings of a burlesque base ball game. There were only eleven of the players so-called and a difficulty arose in consequence as to making even sides. It was finally arranged by putting the biggest and smallest player on the same side giving the odd one to the other. The score was 999 to 1001 when the game closed on account of darkness. A couple of hundred reprobates who would be ashamed to let their wives and grown-up children know where they were crowded the home plate and foul ball lines and a sprinkling of rising young candidates for penitentiary records gazed upon the game from the seats. There is nothing to be said of this part of the exhibition excepting that it was more degrading than anything that has struck the town since the last 'living statuary' show. A beer stand did a good business near the diamond field the 'boys' seeing to it that the players did not go thirsty."
Our reporter then goes on to explain a fight that began next between the team business manager Clark Frankhouse his assistant and a young Black man named Ben Hayes. A follow-up piece on the following day declares Hayes sustained only minor injuries. "The only real damage by the affair has been to the peace and dignity of the city of Springfield." Copies of newspaper reports included with lot.

Debra Shattuck author of the book Bloomer Girls said in an interview: "The earliest female professional baseball teams including the Female Blue Stockings of Philadelphia and Female Red Stockings of New York 1879-were comprised of teenagers and young women drawn primarily from the ranks of circus and theatrical troupes. Few had experience playing baseball. They spoke of their uniforms as "costumes" mimicked mannerisms of male players "kicking" at umpires for example and purposely incorporated humor into their games forming bucket brigades to relay balls in from the outfield skipping around the bases etc."
.
