A remarkable record of a generation of sporting trips to the remote Canadian wilderness to the Muskoka district in Ontario north of Toronto near the present day Algonquin Park from 1858 to 1880 compiled from contemporary notes on an early typewriter and with two printed accounts. Comprising:<br/>1 Sketches of Hunting Trips 1858-1878. Two volumes. Substantial typescript account of trout fishing and deer hunting trips on onion skin paper mounted on larger sheets. Volume I comprises the years 1858-1877 106 pages. Volume II covers the year 1878 17 pages with inserted ephemera from 1879 including a printed New Year's greeting; a printed notice with club logo Death of Minnie Cole Cedar Narrows Trading Lake May 1879; an envelope of Toronto newspaper clippings on the Toronto Lacrosse Club with several Dwight-Wiman members in appearance; the Richmond County Sentinel New Brighton Staten Island vol. Very interesting account of Harris' explorations in southern Africa giving a view of the land and the abundance of game at the earliest stages of the Boer emigration from British territories. In an addendum to the prefatory matter Harris records learning of the massacre of Piet Retief and his party of voortrekkers by Dingaan and the Zulu in February 1838. The work was subsequently published as The Wild Sports of Southern Africa in London editions in 1839 1841 1844 and 1852. This edition includes a six-page list of subscribers chiefly military and civil servants in India. With the ownership signature and bookplate of H.A. Bound in Japanese embossed leather titled in gilt up the spine a.e.g. by Sarah T. Prideaux and signed with her stamped initials "S.T.P. 1892" on the back pastedown. With an early American provenance "James W. Shea Shadyside Pittsburgh 12/25/94". Extremities and joints rubbed with 1/4-inch triangular chip from head of spine scuff at foot. Dark green half morocco slipcase and chemise. First edition. Vignette on title page and wood-engraved illustrations in the text. iv 212 pp. 1 vols. 12mo. Very Early Unrecorded Prideaux Binding. An UNRECORDED Prideaux binding from early in her career bound in embossed Japanese leather with polychrome patterns of fish turtles and seaweed similar to a binding on The Water Babies from the same period. The lettering is bold and simple titled up the spine with no further gilt tooling. Prideaux sent work to the Columbian World's Fair Exhibition in Chicago 1893. The Pittsburgh provenance suggests that this was one of the bindings displayed there.<br/><br/>"Her first three known bindings are quite plain but they are bound in decorative leathers. One is gray and white snakeskin the other two in colorful Japanese embossed leathers; of this latter pair one has the design of seaweeds and sea creatures the other the design of chrysanthemums and other flowers The British Bookmaker Vol. 4 p. 26. The sea creatures binding is on one of two copies of Charles Kingsley's The Water Babies bound for the 1891 Tregaskis exhibition probably the first exhibition Sarah Prideaux entered . An outstanding record of outdoor life and sport in southern Louisiana being Pringle's account of his shooting near the Teche and Attakapas country. "I shot almost altogether on the Camperdown and Cypre-Mort grounds; both very extensive inland marshes with low prairies and sloughs adjacent."<br/><br/>Pringle was the son of the distinguished South Carolina politician John Julius Pringle and here he recounts in elaborate detail and with marvelous photographs his hunting experiences over twenty years from 1867 in the bayous of Louisiana. It is also an account of the ecological consequences of the conversion of marshlands to agricultural purposes: with draining of the swamps and the extension of the New Orleans and Opelousas Railway now the Southern Pacific to Franklin the snipe came no more. Pringle also calls attention to the destruction of northern nesting grounds and the effect upon snipe populations.<br/><br/>"The most valuable record of game we have. D. Coleridge." Arthur Duke Coleridge 1830-1913 was clerk of assizes on the Midland circuit and author of Eton in the Forties by an old Colleger 1896; and Reminiscences 1921 edited by J.A. Fuller-Maitland.<br/><br/>William Spencer 1846-1928 "Pa" was a music teacher and organist who lived at Fernlea in Cookham and was father of eight children and "was described by an acquaintance as 'a patriarchal figure who cycled around Cookham reciting Ruskin aloud'"ODNB. His eldest son William the artist of this album was a child prodigy pianist who went on to become a professor at the Bern Music Institute. William "most certainly was a draughtsman. Indeed he had to decide between a career in art or one in music and decided on music . My feeling is that both Pa and Will may have been associated with the London Bach Choir which A.D. Coleridge helped set up in 1875" Ken Pople personal communication 2006.<br/><br/>William's two younger brothers were British artists Sir Stanley Spencer 1891-1959 and Gilbert Spencer 1893-1979; all received an unconventional late Victorian education at home. This edition places North's essay before the descriptions of the fish. The BM copy has watermarks dated 1832; the present copy is dated 1830 on the title page and the plate leaves are dated 1824 in the watermarks. Irish-born newspaperman William M. Laffan 1848-1909 worked on San Francisco and Baltimore papers before coming to write for the New York Sun. He became the publisher of the Sun in 1884 and in 1897 he purchased the paper with backing from J.P. Morgan. In later life he was interested in Chinese porcelain and complied the catalogue of Morgan's collection.<br/><br/>This group of deft and detailed illustrations recording camp scenes hunting incidents and outdoor vistas was drawn by Laffan for his article "Deer Hunting on the Au Sable" Scribner's Monthly vol. XV no. 6 1878 pp. 753-767 which recounts a successful hunting trip in northern Michigan with a party organized by John Erwin of Cleveland with a bag of 23 deer or as the final illustration records "a ton and a half of venison".
