8vo., Tenth Edition [styled 'Ninth Edition' on title], on laid paper, free endpapers mildly browned, title lightly dust-soiled, some mild and inoffensive age-staining (principally at fore-margins and edges); in SIGNED BINDING BY BIRDSALL OF NORTHAMPTON of nineteenth century cloth boards, tree calf back, backstrip with six gilt rules, second compartment with original leather label lettered and ruled in gilt, label worn but gilt mainly legible, uncut, sometime neatly recased with new endpapers to style, joints cracked (but binding entirely sound), a very good, crisp copy. Vernor and Hood [and many others], 1805 Charlotte Mason's important collection was first published in 1773 and Maclean records a further seven eighteenth-century editions. Bitting adds a Dublin imprint of 1778 as a result of which subsequent copies are one edition later than that stated, hence that with 'eighth edition' on title in actually the ninth (Cagle 864) and the present issue (styled 'ninth edition') is actually the tenth (see Cagle pp. 621-3). The present edition retains the introduction to the first edition, the advertisement to the sixth edition, and the appendix on poultry, the dairy, the kitchen and fruit gardens. Scarce in any early edition.

Published nine months after the first impression. David's second book, and to many the finest of the three classic titles that changed the nature of English cookery for ever. In common with her first work 'A Book of Mediterranean Food' this volume is greatly enhanced by the wonderful Minton illustrations. All early issues are very scarce in anything like this condition.

Exceedingly rare first edition of this utopian novel reflects the nationalist atmosphere of the period and mostly reflects the problem of how women will serve Turkish nationalism as an ideology and realizes this through the protagonist of the novel named Kaya. Halide Edib [or Edio] Adivar was a Turkish novelist, teacher, ultranationalist and feminist intellectual. She was best known for her novels criticizing the low social status of Turkish women and what she saw from her observation as the lack of interest of most women in changing their situation. She was a Pan-Turkist and several of her novels advocated for the Turanism movement. The term "Turan" is of Iranian origin and is believed to refer to a prehistorical human society in Central Asia. Turanism, also known as pan-Turanianism, pan-Turanism, or simply Turan, is a pseudoscientific pan-nationalist cultural and political movement proclaiming the need for close cooperation, or political unification between people who are claimed by its supporters to be culturally, linguistically or ethnically related and to have Inner and Central Asian origin, such as the Turks, Mongols, Tungus, Hungarians, Finns, Estonians, and other smaller ethnic groups, as a means of collaborating towards shared interests and opposing the cultural and political influences of the powers of Europe and East Asia. It was born in the 19th century to counter the effects of pan-nationalist ideologies such as pan-Germanism and built upon the ideas of pan-Slavism (e.g. the idea of a "Turanian brotherhood and collaboration" was borrowed from the pan-Slavic concept of "Slavic brotherhood and collaboration"). Very Good Turkish Original illustrated wrappers. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In Turkish. 109 p., 40 numerous b/w ills., and many unnumbered b/w photographic plates. Small label on front cover, occasional light fading in pages. Otherwise a very good copy. First and only edition of this first complete book on oarsmanship ever printed in Turkey, written by the Turkish oarsman champion hold the championship for a long time in the early period of the Turkish Republic. The book includes the details of the oarsmanship sport, boat building, rules, and western and Turkish history of this sport. Nevin Hassan started rowing in Galatasaray Bebek Boathouse [i.e. Kayikhâne] in 1929, and in the same year, he captured Eftal Nogan's championship in Tek Çifte boat from Altinordu. Nevin Hassan left active sports at a young age after 1935, went to Germany to study at the Berlin Technical High School, and followed the 1936 Berlin Olympics as a correspondent for "Kirmizi Beyaz dergisi" [i.e. the Red-White magazine]. During his education in Germany, he worked with F. K. Gwinner and Tom Sullivan, two of the most famous rowing coaches in the world at the time, at the Berliner Ruder-Club, and also read the books of the famous sports authority Steve Fairbairn and compared them with the Orthodox rowing style.
