First edition of this important early mathematical approach to poker; along with Blackbridge's The Complete Poker Player 1875 it is the earliest book devoted soley to the game. The author Henry T. Winterblossom argues that knowing the odds and probabilites of success with each hand mitigates the risk inherent in gambling and reduces the player's reliance on dumb luck: "All games of chance create a morbid appetite in those who indulge in them in proportion to their ignorance of the mathematical basis upon which those games are constructed."

"The National Game" a New York Times article for February 12 1875 suggests that Winterblossom is a pseudonym and though the author's real name is not revealed he was thought to be a member of New York's literary Lotus Club.

The earliest contemporary notice of Blackbridge's Complete Poker Player considered with Winterblossom the first books on the sport was a review in the 10 April 1875 edition of the New York Times - evidence perhaps that Winterblossom's work has precedence as the first book on poker. In addition to the present volume and books on finance and horse racing he wrote A History of Fly Fishing for Trout 1921 and River Keeper 1934. He died in 1938 just before he was due to receive a Baronetcy; instead this was conferred on his five year old son with the Major's wife being accorded the style and title of a widow of a Baronet. Connett proprietor of The Derrydale Press imported some unsold copies of A Summer on the Test for sale to his customers subsequently prompting Frazier to list it in his enumeration of Press titles as "an important and beautiful Derrydale related item". It was my thought to have it printed in pamphlet form by the office printer. Our mutual friend G. Franklin Ludington suggested that I should have it done by Derrydale and print only ninety-nine copies that it should be illustrated and that Mrs. Pickering should color the frontispiece. These things were done and to my astonishment and eventual undoing the book shortly became a collector's item." Siegel 31; Frazier p-6-a The Derrydale Press unknown books
