Laffan 1848-1909 worked on San Francisco and Baltimore papers before coming to write for the New York Sun. He became the publisher of the Sun in 1884 and in 1897 he purchased the paper with backing from J.P. Morgan. In later life he was interested in Chinese porcelain and complied the catalogue of Morgan's collection.<br /> <br /> This group of deft and detailed illustrations recording camp scenes hunting incidents and outdoor vistas was drawn by Laffan for his article "Deer Hunting on the Au Sable" Scribner's Monthly vol. XV no. 6 1878 pp. 753-767 which recounts a successful hunting trip in northern Michigan with a party organized by John Erwin of Cleveland with a bag of 23 deer or as the final illustration records "a ton and a half of venison". The very scarce printed memorial printed on board the ship of FDR's Third Presidential Cruise on the USS Houston from the July 14 to August 9 1938 on his way to the Galapagos Islands FDR was the first U.S. President to visit them. In the introduction to the booklet one of the editors records that "Shortly after the cruise commenced certain members of the Houston personnel conceived the idea of publishing a book which would relate graphically all of the interesting incidents happening on board our ship . We trust that the following pages will keep alive fond memories of a happy cruise with as grand a shipmate it has ever been our privilege to meet." There are numerous photos of Roosevelt with the crew and the Presidential party shots of the Galapagos and its strange fauna and a good deal of wit and raillery in the text and photos directed toward the "pollywogs" on the part of the "shellbacks" in anticipation of the approaching traditional ceremony of "crossing the line." The ship called at Cocos Island and the log records successful sport fishing for sailfish in those waters. The U.S.S. Houston was sunk during the war. A wonderfully light-hearted and very scarce piece for the FDR collector at a time when the clouds of a world war were gathering on the horizon. The most significant work on suicide of the eighteenth century. <br /> <br /> Together with dueling the author devotes a separate treatise to suicide's relationship to gambling. A "most frequent source of suicide" writes the author gambling is "often the last stage and completion of a vicious character." The second chapter of the treatise deals with the universality of gambling with histories of play in China Sumatra North America Africa and ancient civilizations.<br /> <br /> The substantial "Treatise on gaming" at the end of vol. II discusses the vices of gambling covering dice cards "the pursuits of the turf" lotteries and stock-jobbing all "notoriously productive of either direct or indirect self-murder." Among those in the lengthy "List of Subscribers" in volume one and an additional one in volume 2 are the Archbishop of Canterbury William Heberden who attended the melancholic Samuel Johnson and was called in to advise in the case of George III's indisposition William Hawes of the Humane Society and Samuel Whitbread reformist MP who ironically committed suicide himself in 1815. Scarce polemical guide to wolf hunting by Benjamin Corbin 1835-1912 Civil War soldier trapper hunter stockman and frontier land promoter who called himself the "boss wolf hunter." Born in Virginia he was raised in Ohio and hunted there and in Iowa before emigrating to North Dakota. Corbin boasts of eighty wolf scalps from Iowa where a bounty was paid for every wolf killed and advocates a county and state bounty for the extirmination of wolves. Corbin's Advice includes chapters on his Civil War experiences and transcripts of his struggle to get paid his wolf bounty. With discussion of the North Dakota wolf population and the cost of depredations to ranchers' flocks and herds.<br /> <br /> In Wolves and the Wolf Myth in American Literature 2009 S. K. Robisch describes one of Corbin's trapping methods as the exemplar of "what has been done to wolves in the United States .demanding that we rethink ourselves our literature and our mythology in earnest" and concludes "Sometimes the job is to aim someone's face at Ben Corbin's advice and hold it there until revulsion gives way to awareness."<br /> <br /> Inscribed on the front flyleaf "Compliments of Benj. Corbin."<br /> <br /> This copy with a stamped address panel to J. W. Freeland Corydon Iowa. Freeland 1840-1912 was a county judge and trustee of the town. Corbin's book was printed at the offices of the Bismarck Weekly Tribune in a June 1899 issue of which Corbin advertised town lots for sale in Glencoe Emmons County with a youthful portrait of himself and a sketch of a trapping young wolves both cuts appear in the present volume.
