12mo., First Edition thus, with several woodcut illustrations in the text, neat nineteenth century signature on front free endpaper, title and first page of text; original publisher's brown grained cloth, boards with double frame border enclosing an elaborate an elaborate lozenge all in blind, very neatly recased with new cloth backstrip to style, original gilt lettering laid down, fore-edges lightly dust-soiled else a very good, crisp copy in sympathetically restored publisher's binding. According to the English editor's Preface this scarce work is 'an adapted translation of one of the most popular treatises on French Cookery, entitled La Cuisiniere de la Campagne et de la Ville ou Nouvelle Cuisine Economique, Paris, Audot, 1846'. The success and stature of the French original is compared to that of Mrs. Rundell. It has been suggested that this is in fact a second edition of a work with a similar title published by Thomas Boys in 1825 [Bitting, p. 554; Oxford, p. 157; Wellcome III, 67]; however this would contradict the Preface, and there is no mention of such a kinship in Oxford who lists both volumes. A very nice copy of an extremely scarce work. Oxford, p.177 (recording the publisher as 'David Boyne'). Not in Cagle.

An advertisement for a game between the barnstorming team the Mohawk Colored Giants and Washington D.C's Hillsdale Club taking place in the Colonels’ stadium near Hudson New York in 1938.1 The Giants reformed in 1929 after an initial stint in Schenectady in 1913–1914 and were active for around fifteen years. Washington D.C. had a robust network of African American teams during the period. Sam Lacy who played semi-professional baseball after college apparently played for the club at one point.2 We find no record of the “South Atlantic†division but it could very likely have been hyperbole to build enthusiasm for the game.

1 “Mohawk Colored Giants vs. Hillsdale†Hudson Evening Register Hudson NY August 25 1938 sports section listing games scheduled for Friday August 26 1938.
2 “Sam Lacy†Contemporary Black Biography vol. 54 Thomson Gale 2006. unknown

Written by a human surgeon and first published in 1753 this popular work was primarily a compilation of earlier writers. It went into many editions the first edition is extremely rare and the early editions are scarce

This copy has a remarkable provenance connecting it to the immediate family of GILBERT WHITE of Selborne. Benjamin White c.1725-1794 was the younger brother of Gilbert White 1720-1793 author of the celebrated Natural History of Selborne 1789 which Benjamin White in fact published. Benjamin White's shop at Fleet Street and the Strand Horace's Head "became a meeting place for naturalists and as was customary was used as a poste restante in 1775 by Gilbert White's correspondent Thomas Pennant whose books White published and by others. White's range of titles is indicated in his advertisement at the end of J. Ellis and D. C. Solander's Natural History of the Zoophytes 1786 which he published. They included Mark Catesby's Natural History of Carolina in two volumes which perhaps inspired Audubon" DNB.

White's engraved bookplate of South Lambeth is affixed to the front pastedown; along with that of his son JOHN WHITE who assisted Gilbert in the preparation his journals for publication and contributed a Memoir of his famous uncle for the 1802 edition.
