For example one photo features several Canadian swimmers in uniform in 1930 with the caption: "Swimming champions add to picturesque country at Lake Louise Canada. They are left to right: Agnes Geraghty Olympic swimmer; Catherine Ames Like Lindstrom Metropolitan Distance Champion; Constance Hanf Junior Metropolitan Champion; Eleanor Holm National Champion back stroke 100 and 200 yards; Georgia Colemen National Champion Diver. All 27 baseball cards present and pristine except a tiny crease in the bottom corner that got folded over affecting Henry Sauer and Ted Williams. Samuel Chifney 1753-1807 inventor of the Chifney bit was a prominent jockey and trainer and states the DNB "He was long considered the best horseman of his time". In 1790 he was engaged as "rider for life" by the Prince of Wales later George IV and on October 20 1791 rode the Prince's horse Escape at Newmarket narrowly losing although the Prince not having placed a bet was not out of pocket. The following day under Chifney Escape won: this time both the Prince and Chifney had placed bets and the Prince realized a substantial sum. Chifney was called before the Jockey Club but nothing was proved against him. However as the result of a resolution by the Club the Prince sold his stud and left the turf. Chifney continued to race but in 1806 he left Newmarket for London and never returned dying in poverty the following year. In 1795 Chifney published this book in an attempt to clear his name and to raise money - the work of 170 pages in wrappers was priced at an extraordinary five pounds. This second edition appeared in 1804 and was still priced £5/ as stated here on the half-title the price has been struck through ink and re-priced one pound. <br /> A VERY RARE WORK DEALING WITH ONE OF THE CENTURY'S GREATEST RACING SCANDALS. Peter Artedi or Petrus Arctaedius February 22 1705 - September 27 1735 was a Swedish naturalist and is known as the "father of Ichthyology."<br/><br/>Artedi was born in the province of Ã…ngermanland. Intending to become a clergyman he went in 1724 to study theology at Uppsala University but he turned his attention to medicine and natural history especially fishes. In 1728 his countryman Carolus Linnaeus arrived in Uppsala and a lasting friendship was formed between the two. In 1732 both left Uppsala Artedi for England and Linnaeus for Lappland; before parting they reciprocally bequeathed to each other their manuscripts and books in the event of death.<br/><br/>Artedi accidentally drowned at Amsterdam where he was engaged in cataloguing the collections of Albertus Seba a wealthy Dutchman who had formed what was perhaps the richest museum of his time. According to agreement his manuscripts came into the hands of Linnaeus and his Bibliotheca Ichthyologica and Philosophia Ichthyologica together with a life of the author were published at Leiden in 1738.<br/><br/>On his grave an epitaph by George Shaw is engraved:<br/><br/>Here lies poor Artedi in foreign land pyx'd<br/><br/>Not a man nor a fish but something betwixt<br/><br/>Not a man for his life among fishes he past<br/><br/>Not a fish for he perished by water at last.
