One album in original green cloth slightly worn the other in 3/4 red calf a little rubbed spine gone. A few photographs faded one or two with slight blemishes but overall a fine collection. Each album is housed in a new grey cloth protective slipcase with chemise and crimson morocco spine label. the images mostly 3 1/2 x 4 1/2 inches and inset to the album two per page. 2 vols. 8vo each photo approximately 6 1/2 x 10 inches. Hunting and Fishing in Westchester 1900. Refuting the rule that the family photo album is invariably an icon of transcendent uninterest this collection of amateur photographs is a thoroughly beguiling one. The prints mostly in sepia record the happy idle moments of a prosperous family who lived or vacationed in the Bedford-Croton area of New York's Westchester County. Scenes include "On road to Bedford Station" hunting scenes on the "Croton River at Croton Falls" "Kisco River" and "Bronx River" etc. Subjects include some excellent shots of the wild surrounding countryside wildlife family members doing interesting things hunters or anglers displaying their trophies some posed "gag" shots and a host of other scenes. Agreeably the photos are not pasted down but slid into card mounts enabling them to be removed or rearranged. To turn the pages of these albums is to immerse onself in the scenes and pleasures of an easy less complicated day: a nostalgic and tranquilizing piece of delightful Americana. unknown books

A few minor wrinkles folds and an occasional tear else in uniformly fine condition. From the estate of Daniel Rochford. With numerous examples of Smith's art including two watercolor studies for his November 1932 football cover of The Sportsman magazine. 1 vols. An extremely interesting archive chronicling the personal friendship and professional relationship of two colorful individuals. During Daniel Rochford's five-year tenure as Managing Editor of The Sportsman Harold Smith did a number of small black and white drawings for the magazine and at least one cover of a stylized formation of football players two watercolor studies of which form part of this collection. Rochford left the magazine in 1935 to enter the public relations field subsequently joining Standard Oil of New Jersey and until Smith's death in 1969 gave the artist a number of Esso commissions for brochures and film strips as well as other work.

The archive includes approximately 35 ALS from Smith some 65 pages and two post cards about 30 carbons of letters from Rochford mostly dating from the 1940s on Esso matters plus some other correspondence. In addition included in Smith's art works are are nine pencil sketches for 1930s political cartoons two pencil advertisement roughs for Mt. Tremblant ski area and four watercolor skiing sketches nine sheets of pencil sketches possibly for a book or article eight amusing ink on tissue sketches for Esso publications one black and white and four watercolor caricatures of the artist and others and a particularly delightful 18 x 24 sheet of 19 watercolor scenes illustrating a 1946 visit Smith paid to the Rochfords to do their portraits.

In his last years Rochford regretted that distance and circumstance prevented the possibility of he and Smith collaborating on a book. It is a regret the viewer of this archive will share.

A SPLENDID COLLECTION. unknown

The first Behrens edition of this foundational work on poker essentially a wrappered issue of the second Dick & Fitzgerald edition of 1880. The rare first edition of 1875 - with only one copy located on OCLC - is along with Winterblossom's The Game of Draw Poker the earliest published work dedicated solely to poker. Beyond the moralizing tone Blackbridge's work provides a technical and probabilistic discussion of the game and includes a section on "Probabilities at Draw-Poker" by Dr. Pole. The rules printed in Chapter XIX are adapted from The American Hoyle. Pp. 143-174 reprint Prof. A.R. Proctor's "Poker Principles and Chance Laws."
