A private family album documenting two of the tours of the celebrated yacht Ara owned by William K. Vanderbilt II. Although Vanderbilt published numerous volumes recording his cruises these voyages do not appear among his published logs. The photographs are captioned by his daughter Muriel who records numerous details in a neat hand.<br/>The cast of characters in 1925 includes "Pops" Wm. K. Vanderbilt II "Self" Muriel her sister Consie Consuelo Muriel's fiancé Freddy Frederic C. Church Jr. whom she married in July 1925 and divorced in 1929 Ellen & Dick. Muriel's uncle Harry Harold S. Vanderbilt makes a walk-on appearance in Key West. Among the party's activities was fishing with more than a dozen photographs showing the sisters working the rod members of the party with the morning's catch variously tuna barracuda shark and a sea turtle and portraits of the three young ladies Dick and Freddy each holding a trophy catch. <br/>The 1930 cruise to Haiti Jamaica and Cuba with a party including Muriel "Pops" Rosie his second wife Rosamund and Tony comprises views from the yacht and at ports of call as well as many scenes of rafting on the Rio Grande River and a few snapshots of fishing on the Demaji River where the log details three days of successful tarpon fishing not illustrated.<br/>The group of post cards includes scenes in Cuba Haiti Lake Tahoe and the Monterey coast in California including several real photo cards of the Pebble Beach area among them a shot of woman golfer Marion Hollins on the 7th Green.<br/>A window into a lost world of private travel and an excellent visual record of two Vanderbilt family cruises with good sporting content. Twombly Canoe Trip August 1914. Wonderful abundantly illustrated account of a canoeing and fishing trip through the Algonquin Provincial Park in Ontario compiled from the diaries of the participants: Henry Bancroft Twombly "the Squire" and two "newly fledged lawyers" his son Edward Bancroft Twombly Yale 1912 and Theodore Stanwood Kenyon. Father and son were both members of Skull & Bones during their respective years at Yale. Henry Bancroft Twombly was the nephew of Hamilton McKown Twombly and Florence Vanderbilt Twombly of Florham. Hamilton Twombly had died in 1910 disconsolate after his only son Hamilton Jr. drowned during a camping trip in New Hampshire in 1906. From Summit N.J. the trio set out for Ottawa and then along the rail line to the Algonquin Provincial Park where their guide Don Tobin awaited them. Against a backdrop of unease over the war clouds in Europe the group canoed through lakes and streams portaging where necessary camping fishing and enjoying the rugged life. The Algonquin Park had been established in the 1890s and two large hotels had attracted one kind of visitor. The Twombly party were determined to avoid the crowds and seek out the more isolated reaches. The illustrations are snapshots taken along the way showing scenery camp life canoeing fishing with displays of trout and occasional clowning. The first edition was illustrated with six full-page drawings of which we offer five--what became of the other is not known. These drawings were owned by Frank Lowe and after Lowe's death were for many decades in the possession of sportsman and bibliophile Duncan Andrews . As was the case with The Silver Horn drawings these drawings done on a large scale and reduced considerably in the book are more attractive in their original larger format.<br/>The drawings included are: "Captain Walsh makes a landing with Kerry's Own"; "The black-gowned Rector his rod held firmly aloft"; "We've got to stay close to hounds or we'll lose 'em"; "The Downs-man"; and "Woodsman" an image also used as the title page vignette. In addition there are two identical sheets of proofs of these drawings reproduced in the actual size used in the book. Son of American Impressionist John Henry Twachtman J.
