The Massachusetts Gazetteer of 1890 said of the town: "Merrimac is a thrifty and attractive manufacturing town situated on the north bank of the Merrimack River. The principle business is carriage making in the different departments of which in numerous shops some 500 men are engaged."<br/>The mid 1800s marked the peak of Merrimac's carriage-making and by 1888 there were nineteen carriage-making shops as well as other companies related to the carriage-making industry. Between 1881 and 1889 Merrimac's carriage factories were making 1500 quality carriages per year. Companies such as J.B. Judkins and Company Loud Brothers and H.G. & H.W. Opinionated and witty his personality shines through in this collection of letters. <br/><br/>On animal classification: "Between us girls I think the American taxonomists have gone hog wild on sub-species. I think the British are much smarter.They say that all caribou are one species and they have damn few sub-species." <br/><br/>On an acquaintances and associates: "As I remember him he was a little guy dark and strictly a bastard"; "Bill Steigers is likewise a big-bore nut playing with a large bullet or gazing at a big hole in the end of a barrel gives him a deep and voluptuous satisfaction often causing tumescence in his male organ"; "From all I can tell this Earl Etter is a real vicious bastard fat-headed quarrelsome and mean. One thing I know for certain is that he is an ignoramus"; "This Herter is quite a guy. I think he's at least half nuts maybe more. This program is the Giant edition and features some of the best talent in baseball ever. Despite losing the opener the Yanks went on to win the series four games to two. This would be Joe DiMaggio's last series and the first series for Yankee future star Mickey Mantle and Giants future star Willie Mays. This program is the Cleveland Indian edition and represents a disappointing trip to the series for the Indians as the they lost in four straight to the New York Giants. Despite what was considered a great pitching staff the Indians couldn't compete with the hitting power of the Giants. In this series key Giant players included Willie Mays Monty Irwin Don Liddle and Alvin Dark. Scarce and unusual complimentary type program that were handed out to fans at Yankee Stadium. Since the second page refers to games 34 and 5 it appears the first two games had already been completed. The first page includes a black and white photo of Yankee Stadium illustrating an actual game. The front page gives historical series results and attendance numbers. The two inside pages were meant to help the fan keep score. This copy is unmarked. The back page gives player stats for both teams. An unusual and somewhat scare bit of World Series history. The Yanks took this series in seven games despite a poor performance from Mantle and Maris.</p> books

The 1964 series shows the Yankees finally losing their domenance in baseball as the Cards win in seven. However there was plenty of talent on both sides including Mickey Mantle Roger Maris Bobby Richardson and Clete Boyer for the Yanks and Curt Flood Lou Brock Bob Gibson and Ray Sadecki for the Cards. Roosevelt pictured seated in the center of the porch the Groton Football team of which Gordon was the Captain and left tackle photo of Coaches and Captains of the Annual St. Marks-Groton Game November 1934 action images from football games and the Yale Freshmen Glee Club-1936.<br/><br/>Gordon Auchincloss 1886-1943 was born in New York and was the son of Edgar Stirling and Maria LaGrange Sloan Auchincloss. His grandfather Samuel Sloan was president of the Delaware Lackawanna & Western Railroad and the Hudson River Railroad predecessor of the New York Central System. Auchincloss graduated from Groton School in 1904. He received an A.B. degree from Yale University in 1908 and an LL. B. degree from Harvard Law School in 1911. He married Janet House on September 14 1912. <br/><br/>Auchincloss served as assistant United States attorney for the Southern District New York and as special assistant to the Attorney General of the United States. He was a member of the law firm of Auchincloss Alley & Duncan and served as secretary of the American War Mission to England and France in November 1917 and as secretary to his father-in-law Colonel Edward M. House during negotiations of the Armistice in November 1918 and during the Paris Peace Conference in 1919. In addition to Chase National Bank he was a director of International Paper and Power Company the Crosse & Blackwell Company societe Financiere de Transports et d'Enterprises Industrielles of Brussels Belgium; Solvay American Corporation and Compania Hispano Americana de Electicidad of Barcelona Spain.He was assistant treasurer of the Democratic National Committee in 1916 chairman of the fund raising committee of the New York Association for the Blind a trustee of the Riverside Church a member of the State and city bar associations and Psi Upsilon and Scroll and Key of Yale. Kurt Meyer-Eberhardt German 1895 - 1957<br/>Kurt Meyer-Eberhardt is one of the most famous and revered 20th century dog artists. He was born in 1895 in Leipzig Germany and died in Munich in 1977. He studied at the Weimar Academy of Fine Arts where he became a student under the artists Theodor Hagen and Lionel Feininger. He rejected a professorship in Weimar and went to Munich in 1918 where he decided to work entirely on animal engravings.<br/>In 1926 he held his last exhibition in the "New Secession." He was a staunch individualist who rejected the offer of a professorship in Weimar because he valued his independence too much. The only thing he wanted was to continue depicting his beloved dogs cats and other animals.<br/>His work has been published by the Hanfstaengl Publishing Company in Munich since 1917. His engravings are still published today at the printing shop in Munich - formally Franz Hanfstaengl Munich . All etchings are still printed on 300lb hand made acid-free paper printed by hand from the original copper plates using the same directions as given by the artist himself. unknown books
