The Melton Hunt Going to Draw the Ram's Head Cover by Sir Francis Grant 1810-1878 painter and president of the Royal Academy was exhibited at the Royal Academy 1839.<br/><br/>Of Grant who is buried at Melton Mowbray Siltzer notes that he was usually neglected by authors of books on sporting pictures and writes after many anecdotes of sporting life at Melton that he "must have met most of these notabilites so that in all these diversions from the main point which is a sketch of the painter's career we are walking beside him so to speak breathing that same sporting atmosphere . in 1839 he showed his Melton Hunt. Engravings have been made from both these pictures but we will deal with the Melton Meet. There is a key to this engraving and as keys usually get lost ."<br/><br/>The Key identifies 37 participants in the Meet.<br/>This note and a passing mention in the Schwerdt catalogue are the only references to the Key; the only institutional copy known to us is in the Virginia Museum of the Fine Arts which holds the original painting by Grant.<br/><br/>Rare.
