Narrative of the adventures of the Skipper the Judge the Deacon and the Doctor on a three-day canoe trip up the Charles river from South Natick to Lake Populatic "supposed to be the head of canoe navigability." In earlier years the party had cruised the river from South street as far as Natick.<br /> The party of four embarked at a boat house in South Natick and by paddle and portage soon left the town behind. The first night they camped in a pine wood. The second day they faced windy conditions and passed the Medfield Insane Ayslum where they took on fresh water from a spring. Their maps were meager and out of date and they first had to navigate "the mystic maze of the maddening Medfield Meadows" before entering the oxbows of the Charles passing ruined factories and difficult portages on their way to the Lake where they made camp for the second night. The return trip was swiftly accomplished on the final day.<br /> <br /> A handsome little volume with light-hearted prose and excellent photographic illustrations often caption with witty remarks. "Dedicated to the girls who stayed at home" on the first page of the text - and as soon as the party returned to South Natick they called their wives and dashed for the train back to Boston. unknown

A straightforward account of the qualities of 21 kinds of fish including flounder eel perch salmon pike trout and others less well known bleak guinead and brief instructions as to how to catch them; the sixpenny pamphlet ends with a three-page discussion of various worms and how to obtain them. Westwood and Satchell list this work similiar to that of Thomas Best's A Concise Treatise on the Art of Angling London 1787 without authorial attribution. The words "but Comprehensive" in the title suggest that this was intended as a sequel to Best a popular work which went into numerous editions. <br /> The words "embellished with a frontispiece" have been effaced from the title page suggesting that for a long time this copy has been lacking the plate as also in the copy retained at Yale. Very good. - A correspondence including 2 letters by the Canadian-born British Ice Hockey Player Colonel Gordon "Don" Dailley inquiring as to the possibilities of booking plays at his community's playhouse. The first is a Typed Letter on 11 inch high by 8-1/2 inch wide creamy white paper addressed to Grant Mills the president of Maine's Lakewood Theatre. Dailley writes "I have had the pleasure of spending short holidays at your Inn and seeing shows during your Summer Theatre Season. We have often wondered whether it would not be worthwhile to bring one or two of the touring shows which visit Lakewood to Fredericton New Brunswick to perform at our Playhouse" He asks if Mills could put him in touch with the "person who organizes the season for you." Signed "G.D. Dailley".</p><p>The retained copy of a letter by Henry Richards the person who books the productions dated January 18 1968 is stapled to Dailley's letter.</p><p>A brief autograph note signed with his initials by Henry Richards on his memo paper forwards both Dailley's letter and his reply suggesting that perhaps the play "What Did We Do Wrong" produced by Jean Dalrymple might be a good fit "This letter and my answer should give you the picture. I understand that it is a most beautiful theatre." Signed "H".</p><p>A retained copy of Jean Dalrymple's typed letter dated June 7 1968 suggests that they could travel to Fredericton after their run at the Lakewood Theatre in Maine.</p><p>Dailley has penned an Autograph Letter on his 10-1/4 inch high by 7-1/4 inch wide "The Bliss Carmen House" stationery apologizing "I was sorry to find out that the Playhouse here will take their annual leave from 15 Aug to 9 Sep therefore we will not be able to handle What did we do wrong" He goes on to ask "If you have something else travelling in the fall-early fall please let me know." Signed "G.D. Dailley".</p><p>Very good.</p><p>The Canadian-born British Ice Hockey player Gordon "Don" Dailley 1911-1989 represented Great Britain at international competitions and with his team of mostly British-born Canadians won the gold medal for Britain at the 1936 Winter Olympics. Dailley served in Great Britain throughout World War II and subsequently held various positions in Ottawa being promoted to Colonel in 1955. He also served in the Korean War. Back in Canada he set up plans for the African Lion Safari and was involved with the United Nations Association as well as OXFAM the New Brunswick Symphony and the Canadian Association of Zoological Parks and Aquariums. Dailley purchased the childhood home of the poet Bliss Carman "The Bliss Carman House" located at Shore Street in Fredericton New Brunswick.</p><p>The recipient Jean Dalrymple 1902-1998 was the dynamic producer and director of theater and light-opera at Manhattan's City Center. Dalrymple began her career in Vaudeville appearing with James Cagney and Carey Grant in the early 1930s. She was a founding member of the American Theatre Wing the theatre service organization. She worked over the years as a personal manager for the likes of Leopold Stokowski Mary Martin Jos Iturbi Andre Kostalanetz Nathan Milstein and Lily Pons. She began her work at City Center with its founding in 1943 serving as a board member and publicist. Her productions there from the 1940s through the 1960s were a revitalizing influence on the whole New York theatre scene. In 1951 Jean Dalrymple married Major-General Philip deWitt Ginder commander of the Thunderbirds in Korea. She was a friend to Presidents and entertainment personalities throughout the world.</p> Fredericton, New Brunswick, January 9th through June 14th, 1968.
