Phillips about gunning in south-easteern Massachusetts from the 1890s to the late 1920s discussing the changing landscape of the state and its impact on sport: "Recent city or metropolitan development has swarmed out of the old centers and enveloped our ponds with thousands of fomrless and gaudy camps thrown up for the most part without a thought for their appearance either from within or without. The old duck stands are gradually bein pushed to the wall and except where a few owners can afford to hold large stretches of shore-line they must eventually be replaced by summer homes. These notes are a first attempt to preserve a record fragmentary at best of the location history and when possible performances of some of these duck stands". George Mackay born 1843 worked with his father in the India trade and went round the Horn several times. He was an avid sportsman in Massachusetts and along the eastern seaboard of America. He spent portions of each year on Nantucket - he married Maria Starbuck - and on West Island Rhode Island. In later life Mackay became very active in efforts to preserve breeding colonies of birds when the feather craze threatened them with extinction. Mackay effectively abandoned shooting after 1897 then resumed the journal in 1921-2. His journal serves as a long-running observation of natural conditions on Nantucket and West Island and a record of sport in a vanished era. Biscotti p. 342 Privately Printed for John C.
