The first edition of two letters written to "a Tory-Member" concerning the management of the War of the Spanish Succession. The first edition. Bound in paper covered boards with renewed endpapers. Comprised of 'The Management Of War. In a Letter To A Tory-Member' and 'The Management Of War. In a Second Letter To A Tory-Member' bound together. These two letters were published one week apart with a note to the rear of the first letter stating "N. B. The Second Letter will be published next Saturday.". Written anonymously by English churchman and classical scholar Francis Hare.A series of letters published surrounding the War of the Spanish Succession in which Francis Hare defended this military endeavour providing support for the war and for the Duke of Marlborough with particular reference to the Flanders campaign. Commencing in 1702 the War of Spanish Succession was starting to lose traction in Britain by 1711 leading to the publication of a number of pamphlets by Hare in support of the war. Bound with the half title. With a number of ink annotations including one reading 'member of parliament in soho square London 1710'. Bound in paper covered boards with renewed endpapers. Externally smart with light cracking to joints and a little chipping to backstrip. Front board tenderly held. Scattered spots to the fore edge. Ink annotations to half title and to the verso of p39. Hare was an English author and raconteur; in his autobiography he expresses the hardships of being an adopted child and the devotion to his adoptive mother Maria as well as a great sorrow concerning his home education at Buckwell Place. A majority of his work includes the biographies of members and connections of his family and descriptive and historical accounts of various countries and cities.This extensive work tells of the author's life from a personal perspective with particular focus on his childhood his time in Oxford and abroad and his home life and relationship with his mother. Illustrated with a frontispiece to each volume and illustrations in text throughout as well as thirty full page plates. Collated complete. In the original publisher's full cloth binding. Externally smart with some shelf wear and bumping to the head and tail of the spine and extremities minor chipping to the head of the spine of vol. II and minor marking to the odd volume. Minor cockling to the spine of vol. IV and VI. Internally firmly bound. With a light minor foxing affecting the first and last few leaves particularly otherwise the pages are generally very clean throughout. Featuring the following ink inscription by the author to the front free-endpaper: 'Agnes Maxwell-Lyte from her life long friend the Author Augustus J. C. Hare signed Christmas at Holmhurst 1902'. Agnes Maxwell-Lyte was the oldest daughter of Sir Henry Churchill Maxwell Lyte; the renowned English historian and archivist who served as Deputy Keeper of the Public Records from 1886 to 1926. In the publisher's original cloth binding with gilt title to spine. Externally excellent with slight bumping to extremities and the odd small faint mark to boards. Bumping to head and tail of spine resulting in small splits to cloth. Author's ink inscription to front free-endpaper dated '1902'. Internally firmly bound. An interesting and significant if not always "scientific" examination of mesmerism with an additional authorial introduction to the 2nd Ed. Townshend's fascination with mesmeric phenomena sometimes obstructs his academic distance most especially when dealing with things like sleepwalking where his theorizing about "mesmeric somnambulism" has him leaping about all over the place. One of the appeals of mesmerism to the pseudoscientific enthusiast and a contributing factor to its pre-eminent popularity was the ability to apply it to nearly any phenomena and gain some result or other.
