A letter about one of his drawings which has now sold to the Duke of York. Sir John Bernard Partridge 1861- 1945 was an English illustrator. Born in London he was the son of Professor Richard Partridge F.R.S. president of the Royal College of Surgeons and nephew of John Partridge portrait-painter extraordinary to Queen Victoria. For some years he was well known as an actor under the name of Bernard Gould. Size is 176mm x 134mm. Condition is good. Light tape marks to edges. Ref19229 <br/> <br/> unknown

The first side of the slip with writing from Bernard Partridge in French "Tout passe - tout casse - tout casse." Which translates to "everything passes everything breaks everything tires." Bernard Partridge a renowned British cartoonist and illustrator. His pieces often feature political satire caricatures and illustrations for Punch magazine showcasing his talent for creating impactful visual content. The second side by A P Herbert writing a humble collaboration with the gentlemen to the left and the right March 29th 1937 Sir Alan Patrick Herbert CH known as A. P. Herbert; 1890 - 1971 was an English humourist novelist playwright law reformist and from 1935 to 1950 an independent Member of Parliament for Oxford University. Size is 160mm x 90mm. Attractive red letterhead in the Arts and Crafts style. The writings she referred to in a previous letter have not come. 'You probably forgot to enclose them. I expect to read some of the papers in the days when I look in the Pall. Mall. Gazette.' He asks her to give him 'an idea of what the publisher proposes to spend on the illustrations and also the size of them and the style - pen & ink or "wash".' He has heard news of her 'from Welsh Ethel Johnson's husband who is with me at the Haymarket'. The Art of The Illustrator by Percy V Bradshaw was published in 1918 by The Press Art School Forest Hill London. In 1918 Percy Bradshaw contacted 20 of the leading illustrators of the day and commissioned each of them for a special illustration. Each artist was given an entirely free hand as to subject the only stipulation being that the painting or drawing should be representative of his/her technique and that each stage in its composition should be shown. Bradshaw then reproduced in 6 plates each step in the artistic process and published the 6 lithographs in a portfolio with a 12 page introduction and description of the process within a card folder. 'The Road to Victory' is the pen and ink drawing demonstrated by Bernard Partridge chief cartoonist at "Punch". Artists in this series are Lawson Wood F.H. Healey is featured with the wings of an angel in flight strumming an Irish harp. The Governor- General of the Irish Free State was the official representative of the British Crown in Ireland . By convention the office was largely ceremonial . Nonetheless it was controversial as many Irish Nationalists regarded the existence of the office as offensive and a symbol of continued British involvement in Irish affairs.The role of Governor-General in the Irish Free State was removed by the Irish Government from the Irish Constitution in December 1936. <br/> <br/> Punch unknown

First edition INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR: 'To my old shipmate "Annan" RMS "Franconia" New York 27/5/26 JPG Bisset'. Lt. Commander Sir James Bisset 1883-1967 was a British merchant sea captain who spent most of his career with the Cunard shipping line. In 1912 he was second officer on Cunard's RMS Carpathia when it responded to distress calls from RMS Titanic taking 703 survivors aboard and taking them to New York. His manual Lifeboat Efficiency 1924 was the British Merchant Marine's house text on the subject until the Second World War; this title a more general text was published around 1930 and distributed to interested passengers for many years thereafter. Between 1925 and 1927 Bisset was chief officer on RMS Franconia and returned to the ship as its captain in June 1939. He spent the first four years of his war service with the ship and the rest of the war as captain of the Queen Mary and the Queen Elizabeth. He made a total of 66 wartime voyages and delivered nearly half a million troops to their military destinations. In 1944 he was made Commodore of the Cunard Line and retired three years later.
