In 1912 he was second officer on Cunard's RMS Carpathia when it responded to distress calls from RMS Titanic taking 703 survivors aboard and taking them to New York. Between 1925 and 1927 Bisset was chief officer on RMS Franconia and returned to the ship as its captain in June 1939. He spent the first four years of his war service with the ship and the rest of the war as captain of the Queen Mary and the Queen Elizabeth. He made a total of 66 wartime voyages and delivered nearly half a million troops to their military destinations. In 1944 he was made Commodore of the Cunard Line and retired three years later.
