"Once in about every generation a book is published which dominates its field. Such a book is Partridge's Dictionary of the Underworld which is not only the first extensive work on the underworld to appear in the twentieth century but also the largest in the English language. . It is truly a monumental work so monumental that scholars may well be disturbed by its aura of substantiality for it will undoubtedly be cited and quoted or years to come." --David W. Maurer American Speech Vol. 26 No. 1 February 1951 38. One of the great lexicographers of the twentieth century ERIC PARTRIDGE 1894-1979 had a keen interest in slang and unconventional English. He wrote over forty books on the English language and compiled the Dictionary of Slang and Unconventional English Shakespeare's Bawdy and A Dictionary of Catch Phrases. 1931139703London: Eric Partridge at The Scholartis Press 1931. First edition first impression 1000 copies printed; presentation copy from one of the contributors inscribed on the front free endpaper "With love and affection Norman Hancock May 23 1931. And apologies for the Rabelaisia!" Hancock contributed the short story "War from the Ranks" described as "admirable" by John O'London's Weekly. That review continued "Here told with directness and entire simplicity we have the experiences of a lance-corporal in the infantry; this is more genuinely illuminating than a vast deal of the stuff that has appeared some of it with great success in the guise of fiction" newspaper clipping tipped-in dated in pencil 27.6.31. Hancock remains elusive but he may be the author of Interlude for John Dent 1932 and An Innocent Grows Up Dent 1947. This is an interesting Great War anthology comprising pieces by Conal O'Riordan Charles Edmonds C. W. Grundy concerning the WAAC John Brophy two contributions "Miles" Stephen Southwold E. C. Pattison Hancock and two by Partridge "Byways of Soldiers' Slang" and "From Two Angles" the latter written under his pseudonym of Corrie Denison. It is divided into three sections "Conceivably True" "Concerning the True" and "Actually True". Octavo. Original orange cloth gilt lettered spine top edge yellow. With dust jacket. Jacket spine toned split at rear fold and with lateral closed-tears across spine panel extensive old paper repairs to verso top edge a little dusty fore-edge a touch foxed front board slightly splayed yet this remains a very good copy bright and sharp in the scarce dust jacket. hardcover
