Book is in excellent condition. Binding is solid and square, covers have sharp corners, exterior shows no blemishes, text/interior is clean and free of marking of any kind. Dust jacket shows the slightest signs of shelf wear only, no tears, now wrapped in clear protective cover. Previous owner's name or sticker in front section of the book. Tells the stories, in "fighter's own words" of facing Muhammad Ali in the ring. Fighter's include: Tunney Hunsaker, Henry Cooper, George Chuvalo, Brian London, Karl Mildenberger, Joe Frazier, Jurgen Blin, Joe Bugner, Ken Norton, George Foreman, Chuck Wepner, etc.
Fotografia originale del peso piuma americano Sandy Saddler (23.06.1926 - 18.01.2001), campione del mondo dal 1948 al 1949 e dal 1950 al 1957. Mm. 253x206. Anni '50 del '900. ill., br. "Gladiatori" parla dell'umanità; dell'umanità impazzita; di quell'umanità impazzita che affolla le palestre di pugilato, i palasport. Sudore, sangue, nasi rotti, aspirazione al dolore, la marcia furiosa dei sacchi da boxe, il rullare di corde in uno scantinato: peso e altezza, vittorie e sconfitte sono le misure certe di una verità di carne che fuori dal ring non può essere attinta. Autore fra i più significativi della letteratura italiana contemporanea per la maestria con cui inocula la finzione nella verità di una presa diretta sul reale, dimostrando così all'inverso il nodo dolorosamente vero di ogni costruzione finzionale, non importa quanto elaborata, quanto formalizzata, Antonio Franchini si accanisce sul proprio stile e rivela l'opprimente insufficienza del linguaggio, in ciò portando alle conseguenze estreme la regressione di certo verismo: è infatti nelle zone in cui il linguaggio si disarticola e il silenzio riempie come magma le fenditure che si inoltra Franchini; nelle zone in cui - di fronte all'uccisione casuale di un pugile - lo stile non può che azzerarsi, la parola ridursi alla fonazione di un cronista, la frase a una voce protesa nel vuoto. Ring e letteratura questo infatti condividono: sono spazi chiusi, delimitati dalle forze opposte della stilizzazione e della sofferenza, della sconfitta e della vittoria, della farsa in agguato e di un reale sempre inseguito, soltanto sfiorato.
