Quando lascia Trieste diretta verso i Caraibi per una crociera invernale, nessuno immagina che alcuni mesi dopo Amaltea navigherà nelle acque della Polinesia e che, in capo a un anno, farà porto ad Auckland, in Nuova Zelanda. La sua rotta sorprende quanti la seguono da terra attraverso le e-mail che giungono via satellitare quando, entrata nell'Indiano, non dirige per il Mar Rosso e il Mediterraneo, come sarebbe logico attendersi, ma fa vela verso Capo di Buona Speranza, attraversa per la seconda volta l'Atlantico e prende terra a Rio. ll grande viaggio di Amaltea raggiunge il suo culmine quando volge la prua verso l'America Latina e scende a sud, in Patagonia e in Terra del Fuoco, dà fondo a Ushuaia, doppia il "mitico" Capo Horn e risale i canali cileni navigando tra i ghiacciai del grande sud. Infine fa capolino nel Pacifico per ritornare in Atlantico attraverso lo Stretto di Magellano e mettere la prua a nord verso le Azzorre e il Mediterraneo. Qui Amaltea naviga nelle acque dello Ionio e dell'Egeo, riscoprendo il grande fascino della Grecia, e dirige infine verso l'alto Adriatico e Trieste. Un racconto visto attraverso l'occhio attento e appassionato del suo protagonista e del suo affiatato equipaggio.
