First edition of this anthology of travel articles through India Kashmir Iraq & Iran following World War I after the author had spent a month in Egypt and then traveled onto India. Automobile travels are frequently mentioned including travels through Iraq into Central Asia and through Iran mostly in Fords. First edition of this scarce souvenir program for the first Rose Cup amateur sports car race held in Portland Oregon in 1961. The course was set up on the old city streets of Vanport which was had served as World War II era shipyard labor housing. Destroyed in 1948 by a failed dike and flood the empty streets and depopulated ghost town were converted into Delta Park with sport venues and race track. The newly-formed Cascade Sports Car Club set up the race course straight through a swamp with a wooden bridge that required the organizers to keep scuba divers on standby to rescue wrecked drivers. First edition of this very scarce promotional pamphlet touting the Firestone Demountable Rim a demountable wheel rim which allowed a flat tire to be unbolted and replaced by another that already had the spare tire mounted. This was the prototype of the famed Ford “wide five†wheel pattern that would last for decades. Spencer Penrose a local entrepreneur gold mining baron and adventurer collaborated with Sunderlin & Drew joining in with the Denver & Rio Grande Railway the Pikes Peak Auto Highway Company The Pikes Peak Automobile Company the Mt. Manitou Park and Incline Railway Company and other investors such as The Pennsylvania Railroad Co. The engineering feat widened and converted the narrow road into the highest highway in the world for automobiles and motorcycles by blasting through fields of massive boulders creating widened switchbacks against the granite cliffs with water stations supply stations and telephones located at convenient locations. The travelers would pay a toll of $2.00 per passenger with a $ 4.00 minimum per car motorcycles were charged $ 2.00 per passenger and children were half-price.
