Though a very similar-looking reprint is dated in 1915 on the title page our copy dated in 1900 on the copyright page only and listing Curtis as the primary publisher conforms to BAL vol. Published three days after Lincoln's death and bordered in black this edition of THE NEW YORK HERALD begins to sift details of the assassination from the fog of recent events and also contains important news regarding the conclusion of the Civil War. One story contains statements of eyewitnesses including Dr. Charles A. Leale who attended to Lincoln in his box at Ford's Theatre immediately after the President was shot. Another story gives details of the route for Lincoln's funeral train. There are also reports on the condition of Secretary of State Seward and the arrest of his attacker. This issue also carries news of the important meeting between Gen. Sherman and Gen. Johnston regarding the latter's surrender. unknown books

Blindstamp of photographer Herbert Cerwin on the bottom right corner. <br /> <br /> San Francisco-born Lincoln Steffens was one of the leading investigative journalists of the Progressive Era. His series of articles covering governmental corruption were published as two collections under the titles "The Shame of the Cities" and "The Struggle for Self Government" in 1904 and 1906 respectively. He married socialist writer Ella Sophie Winter in 1924 and in 1926 the couple moved from Italy to Carmel-by-the-Sea with their young son Peter. Founding local newspaper "The Carmelite" the couple soon became the source of a great deal of consternation in the small community for their radical views on art and politics. Steffens died in Carmel in 1936.<br /> <br /> 9.5 x 7.75 inches. Very Good plus. N.p. unknown

"Net amount of Duty securd One hundred thirty three Dollars & eighty one cents." Signed by "B enjamin Lincoln Collector". <br /><br />Benjamin Lincoln 1733-1810 was a major general in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War involved in John Burgoyne's surrender of a British army oversaw the largest American surrender of the war at the 1780 Siege of Charleston and accepted the British surrender at Yorktown acting as George Washington's second in command. "Lincoln's service in the Saratoga campaign had made him particularly popular in western Massachusetts. At the outbreak of Shays' Rebellion in 1786 he was put in command of the Massachusetts militia marching against the insurgents and he personally raised $20000 to finance the expedition. On January 20 1787 he marched from Boston to relieve General William Shepard 1737-1817 who was holding the arsenal at Springfield and one week later he successfully split the Shaysite forces at the Connecticut River. used his influence to ensure ratification of the federal Constitution. Introduction to The Benjamin Lincoln Papers MHS. After the war Lincoln remained in the political arena serving a term as Lieutenant Governor of Massachusetts and as the Collector of the Port of Boston.</p>

A girls' instructional book for use in schools on the management of households and food preparation with an introductory blurb from the Superintendent of Boston Public Schools. The text begins with basic household management including "Rules for Housekeepers" "Rules for Cleaning Dishes" two charts show "Average Composition of Some Common Foods" and "Food Materials Obtained for 25 cents." Included is a chapter of "Suggestions for Teachers." Twenty chapters follow these introductory sections and provide both food recipes and basic kitchen instructions. Following the text the publisher's ads give the reader a good idea of what was of interest in the late 19th century.<br /> <br /> The author Mrs. Mary Johnson Bailey Lincoln 1844-1921 was a leader in Domestic Science who wrote using her married name during her husband's lifetime. After his death she authored using the name Mary J. Lincoln. She was a teacher author and pioneer in nutrition.
