189051976Portland OR: Loyal Orange Lodge No. 79 ca. 1890. One tall double-sided silk ribbon front elaborately embroidered purple w/ American Flag at upper fore-edge Protestant symbols in center including image of King William a Bible and School House chromolithograph pin in orange & gilt by W. & H. of Newark NJ black silk ribbon on verso silver lettering and bust of Abraham Lincoln gold braid on one side silver on other minor dustsoiling slight darkening to ribbon very slight fraying still a VG exemplar. This exceedingly scarce Loyal Orange Lodge No. 79 remembrance ribbon for Abraham Lincoln was issued by the Portland Oregon Orange Order in the 1890s to celebrate Protestant values and to heavily promote independent public schools away from Catholic Church control. The Orange Order was founded in September 1795 after the Battle of the Diamond outside a small village in Northern Ireland and became a Protestant Secret Society loosely based on Freemasonry ritual. The victory by King William III over King James of Scotland in 1690 at the River Boyne is remembered with great affection and eventually the fraternal group would number over 100000 members at the end of the 19th century largely drawn from Northern Ireland and Northern Irish immigrants.
