1943211901943. WWII Japanese American Japanese American incarceration archive circa 1940s documenting the personal lives of Japanese American detainees at Poston War Relocation Center in Arizona and Heart Mountain Relocation Center in Wyoming during World War II. Executive Order 9066 authorized the forced removal and incarceration of more than 120000 persons of Japanese ancestry two thirds of them United States citizens. This archive provides direct material evidence of communication and daily life in the War Relocation Authority camp system. An addressed envelope postmarked February 20 1943 connects two of the ten major incarceration sites indicating a maintained interpersonal network across camps. Photographs in this archive depict a young Japanese American woman in Western dress posed outdoors with barracks visible in several backgrounds and include an image of a young girl on a see-saw before rows of camp housing illustrating the family and youth experience in the camps.

Archive of 8 pieces including 7 photographs mostly black and white with one color and 1 post stamped envelope addressed to "Mrs. Asako Kudari" sic at Block 15 21 F Heart Mountain Center Wyoming. Circa 1940s. The envelope bears a purple United States stamp depicting an eagle above the slogan "Win the War" and is postmarked February 20 1943 from Block 44 3A Poston Relocation Center Arizona. Photographs measure approximately 6.5 x 3.5 inches to 2.25 x 3.25 inches. Several images show detainees with camp barracks in the background; others portray a young woman with a Japanese American man wearing glasses suggesting prewar memories though no inscription confirms dating.

Poston located in Yuma County Arizona was the largest of the War Relocation Authority camps while Heart Mountain in Park County Wyoming confined nearly 14000 people at its peak. Heart Mountain became a focal point of organized resistance to the military draft of Nisei men in 1944 when 85 young men and seven leaders of the Fair Play Committee were prosecuted under the Selective Service Act after challenging the legality of conscripting citizens while their civil rights were suspended. The present archive predates that confrontation but documents the correspondence networks and ordinary domestic life of the immigrants and citizens detained. Minor edge wear and light surface handling to photographs; envelope with expected postal folds and moderate age toning; overall very good condition. An archive linking two major incarceration sites. unknown

8807Albuquerque: Mark Attwood 1990. First Edition . Hardcover. Very Good. 1st and only edition: "This book is no. 41 in a limited edition of 50. Printed from linocuts on Rives heavyweight paper using a Dufa flat-bed offset press." On the next page preceding the title page: "Another Day in Paradise is a collection of images by a group of people from different countries and backgrounds. Artists printers students curators a director and a doctor participated. Each person was invited to make a linocut on the theme of 'Another Day in Paradise'. No images were edited. One book was printed for each participant." The book is lg. 8vo bound in coarse linen with no titles untrimmed edges. Condition vg; the binding has been slightly distorted by the laying in of a linocut described below. No text in the book other than that quoted above. Attwood whose blindstamped chop-mark appears on the above-quoted limitation page was certified a master printer by Albuquerque's Tamarind Institute about this time; he was soon to return to his native South Africa to found the Artists' Press which arguably has become as important to printmaking in Africa as Tamarind is in the U.S. Famous South African artist Erika Hibbert currently published there by Attwood contributes to this book in what may be her first appearance. Also appearing are Rebecca Schnelker Tamarind curator since 1978 and co-compiler of the Tamarind catalog raisonne; Garo Antreasian Tamarind's first director; Jeff Ryan who with Attwood helped invent the technique of dry lithography; Rita Deanin Abbey author Edward Abbey's second wife who still exhibits in Santa Fe; Bill Lagattuta shop manager at Tamarind; Jaune Quick-To-See Smith a Flathead-Shoshone artist whose work is in much demand; Pawel Frackiewicz who heads the Academy of Fine Art in Wroclaw Poland; Marge Devon a director of Tamarind; Mary Ristow who had a solo show in 1999; Jose Rodriguez now a well-known plein-air painter; Valerie Arber whose work inhabits the Rule Gallery in Denver and about 20 others. This copy apparently belonged to contributor Martha Slaymaker who is exhibited in the Albuquerque airport among many other places and was a fine artist in many media. Her son now runs the company she founded Slaymaker Fine Art Ltd. Laid in are 2 extra copies of her litho and also her original linocut the piece of linoleum itself. Interestingly she SIGNED the linoleum but faintly so her name cannot be seen on the printed versions.

Mark Attwood hardcover

18962053Helena 1896. About very good. 113pp. Original printed wrappers. Spine a bit worn. Brief later manuscript annotations and relatively unobtrusive perforated institutional stamp on front wrapper; rear wrapper with upper corner torn away and closed tear along gutter from lower edge. Light toning internally. Scarce edition of this annual report for 1895 from the offices of the Montana state government concerned with ranching and livestock consisting of the Board of Stock Commissioners the chief veterinarian and the brand recorder. The report of the commissioners is principally concerned with the results of its inspections for the year though other activities such as interactions with the Montana Stock Growers Association are briefly treated. The veterinarian chiefly addresses the appearances and treatments of diseases both of native Montana cattle and those imported mainly from Texas. The preponderance of the volume comprises the report of the Recorder of Marks and Brands which lists and describes all brands registered in the state that year their owners and placements on the animals each accompanied by a small illustration of the brand on a black background. The brands are evidently listed in the chronological order which they were recorded as they are certainly not organized alphabetically; an index provided at the rear is quite useful. Scarce institutionally and on the market. unknown books
